Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.- Image:Irish Wikipedia Main Page screenshot.png was uncategorized on 6 September 2009.

- Thank you, Abigor, and thanks Lar and Túrelio :) I can imagine what it said, having had the same stuff on enwiki last week. It's all a bit futile, really, as I only get to know about it if the my talkpage is recreated and as soon as I go check, it's already been revision-deleted. I'm sure there's more, but it's completely under the radar to me (and thus is pointless) ^_^ - Thanks again! - Alison ❤ 22:17, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- I did the same thing a few weeks earlier (deleted revisions, not oversight obviously). I have also added this page to my watchlist, so when the protection expires, I will keep an eye on it. Cheers Ali! Tiptoety talk 21:21, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Salut, quand j'ai vu ce diff: [1] J'ai cru que j'avais oublié d'ajouter des langues avant de supprimer les sous-pages... Mais ce n'est pas le cas. Donc juste merci ! Otourly (talk) 19:51, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine
Hello, On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. And they believe that commons policy is not so clear regarding the subject. So since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 13:46, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

category for File:The White Slave statue.jpg and File:Child Prostitute - 1871.jpg
Please don't add the pedophilia category again since it's a case of overcategorization. Both files are in the Category:Child prostitution, which is itself in the Category:Child sexual abuse, which is itself in the Category:Pedophilia. See Commons:Categories#Over-categorization for details. Thanks for your comprehension. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 09:44, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Picture verification
Hi there. Would highly appreciate it if you could find time to please verify and follow up this picture on wikimedia-commons. I received the email permission from the owner of the picture with his statement of permission and the license, and forwarded it to permissions-commons-at-wikimedia.org on August 12 2010. Thank you. Best regards. Amsaim (talk) 19:54, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
permission to use
Hi. I'm writing to you as you are on the list of Commons OTRS volunteers, and others don't seem to reply. I have a question concerning "permissions to use" for 2 files I've uploaded. Is there a standard file or format to use for this and if so where is it to be found? Many thanks for your help. Camster2 (talk) 04:30, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there. I'm not really sure of the question. Are you asking is there a standardized email form for granting permission for files via OTRS, or are you looking for a template to mark the files? What is it that you wish to achieve? - Alison ❤ 05:28, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, maybe I haven't been that clear. I uploaded 2 files, photos taken by a third party, then forgot to send permission. I've received this message regarding the files : "The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission" and was wondering if a standardized email for granting permission should be used. Thanks, Camster2 (talk) 11:43, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think I found the template Commons:Email templates. Thanks - Camster2 (talk) 19:12, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alison, on request you protected File:Kapilavatsyayan.jpg. As mentioned on File talk:Kapilavatsyayan.jpg on December 20/21, 2010, please be so kind to un-protect for a short while respectively to re-categorise as requested. Many thanks and merry Christmas :-) 84.75.160.122 16:45, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello Alison, I recently uploaded a file and misnamed it. The file is File:BK Carribean.png and it should have been named File:BK Caribbean.png. Could you please move this for me?

wondering if I can use an image you're credited with
Hi Alison,
My name is Donny Rowles - I'm a journalist from Minnesota, and I am working on a creative writing project and I'd like to use the image credited to you that has a man who had a nose job (rhinoplasty)
I'd like to put it here: http://theyseeus.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/3-demmels-physical-appearance-and-the-importance-placed-on-beauty/ (I'd put it in the section where I talk about plastic surgery)
Would that be ok with you? The project is tough to explain - it's a site that contains documents that were written by aliens (yea I know it's weird) about humans (they call humans "demmels") and in this piece I'm talking about how important beauty is to humans....and that's where the plastic surgery comes in.
If it's ok to use the image, that's great, if not please let me know.
Thanks for your time.

- Hi Donny. You're absolutely welcome to use any image here on Wikimedia Commons for whatever purpose you like. All that's asked, really, is that you attribute the author, mention the license (CC-BY or whatever) and link back here. You can put it in the footnotes or whatever. But in short; feel free to use them for your site, strange as it may be :) - Alison ❤ 06:44, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
thanks Alison!
I will be sure to credit anyone whose picture I use. Thanks!
Rawa77
Hi Alison, can you verify if User:Rawa77 is really a representative for w:RAWA? I suspect an imposter.[2] Thanks!--Officer (talk) 06:42, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there. Thanks for the note. From checking the OTRS ticket (ticket: 2009020710021864), it looks like that account is legitimately associated with rawa.org. Thanks for checking up, though - Alison ❤ 06:47, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Chavette
Hi Alison, what would you say is the personality rights situation with a picture like File:Chavette2.jpg, used in en:WP to illustrate the w:Chav article? Does it require subject consent? --JN466 21:53, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
- I've gone ahead and deleted it, for an entire myriad of reasons. Sorry about the delay - Alison ❤ 06:24, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, Alison. --JN466 12:03, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- I've just listed it at Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#File:Chavette2.jpg. Some of your points seemed off to me; for example the original is still on Flickr under a free license. I wouldn't object to the image being listed for discussion, but unilateral speedy deletion without discussion made me uncomfortable. Thanks. -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:44, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- *sigh* - thanks for letting me know - Alison ❤ 22:22, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
info re deleted picture.
Hi Alison,
As an admin are you still able to see the source of File:Prostitutes in the street of Reeperbahn.jpg? If so does it identify them as prostitutes? In view of Fae's history of BLP issues connected with his RFC/U on Wikipedia, I am wondering whether there would have been continuing BLP issues with this file even if it was renamed here? Thanks. --Peter cohen (talk) 04:00, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks Alison.--Peter cohen (talk) 04:47, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Bali ultimate
I was wondering if you could comment on Bali ultimate's talk page regarding whether you think the block should be overturned or not. I'm still debating lifting the two week block, and I'd appreciate your input. NW (Talk) 23:43, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
