Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Cian O'Connor and Kilkenny, Tokyo Olympics.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Uploading copyright files
[edit]This is a friendly warning. There are formal processes, but most people appreciate a friendly warning first. When you upload files to Wikimedia Commons there are many items you must tick or fill out which deal with copyright ownership. By filling those out you confirm that you have the right to upload these files. But you have uploaded files which are not your copyright, which are not yours to upload. Please read Commons:Copyrights carefully. Commons takes copyright extremely seriously. Continuing this behaviour is likely to lead to removal of editing privileges here. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 07:33, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

- When your block expires, please think before you upload any files whatsoever.
- Any file you upload where the licencing status is dubious will result in increasing lengths of block (0.99 probability) until you are blocked from here indefinitely. This is not a good look.
- I am aware that you are keen on horses and work and study in equitation. It would be foolish to lose the chance to upload correctly licenced and worthwhile pictures here. A major issue is that you have been deceptive in licencing claims. Together with ignoring warnings and your failure to communicate, you have created the circumstances of your block.
- Please know that pictures with imperfect licences may still be donated to Wikimedia Commons, but that this must be done correctly. Read COM:VRT and follow the process there.
- If only you would communicate, engage, with us, then this unpleasantness could have been avoided. Instead, you have displayed I CAN'T HEAR YOU. Wikimedia Commons is an entity based upon the community which runs it. Please try very hard not to fall foul of the rules again. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 12:33, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

When creating a Claim on Wikidata please get it right
[edit]https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5384297 is more likely to be correct than https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q104774235 - a particular painting. Wikidata is hard to use. It is better not to use it until you understand it better.
For example, the first leads to w:en:Equestrian which is a disambiguation page. The question then arises, what was the real target you wished to link to? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 11:02, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

I've explained their next step will be to request an unblock on the applicable projects as the account being unlocked has no bearing on individual projects. - Oppose - This is copy-pasted from, and is indeed identical to the request on, en.wiki. This request does adequately address the issues, or confront the misbehaviour, here on the Commons.
- Aliawalsh22 used the UploadWizard 25 times (!!!)--excluding the sock's uploads--and thus was confronted 25 times (!!!) with a large infographic, the very first page, that says "We can’t accept works created or inspired by others. By default, you can't upload someone else's work. This includes material such as [...] most pictures published on the Internet". This was ignored 25 times (!!!), and required no notice of talk page warnings ("I did not check my notifications during the time I was editing") Further, the very first selection after uploading a file is the binary "This file is my own work" and "This file is not my own work". No WMF experience or copyright knowledge is necessary to understand how to answer questions truthfully, and that the same is mandatory. Aliawalsh22, nevertheless, repeatedly managed to get that wrong, and misrepresented themselves to be the author and/or copyright holder (e.g., File:Berlux Z.jpg, File:Cian O'Connor.png, File:Cian O'Connor.jpg, etc.)
- Repeated disregard for notices placed directly in front of them and failure to apply even the most rudimentary of common sense are, at some point, no longer mistakes ("I will not make this mistake again"), but willful ignorance--and that point is well before 25 times. This request, again, fails to confront the misbehaviour on the Commons, and the lack of acknowledgement that guidance was observed and disregarded suggests the comments are not credible. Alternatively, if we are genuinely meant to believe this request, that this user is so innately lacking in care and clue, the implication would seem to be that they lack compentence required to participate here. For unblocking, please answer two questions.
- Why do you want to be unblocked?
- You said, that all files here must have suitable licenses. Why we can be sure, that your new uploads will have such licenses? Taivo (talk) 10:20, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
- On the fence I am very much undecided, which is not the same as being neutral. I am not neutral.
- On the one hand I see an uploader who could provide useful, correctly licenced files for commons
- On the other hand I see someone who appears "not to have noticed" that the files they uploaded have been deleted for copyright violations, yet re-uploaded them time after time (or so it appeared to me at the time). This became a time sink.
- I need persuading that this uploader will be a net benefit to Commons. I invite them to persuade me. I expect them to demonstrate an understanding of the laws of copyright but not to copy and paste any segment from anywhere else about it. Even then I may remain on the fence. For their clarity, I am not an administrator of this or any project. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:23, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
