Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--Lord Belbury (talk) 16:00, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks for the great images, and your writeup over at Wikipedia! Interesting to see how these things are put together. --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:43, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ah I see you're commenting here. I've just left a comment on your page, I was saying I have quite some more pics from a recent short we did, and would like to use that in the main image to be consistent with the scrubs pics. the NCIS image is a great addition though so cheers for that. Will get to uploading that and categorising the images when I have time :) Adenosine Triphosphate (talk) 16:46, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'll take a quick run at categorising your existing uploads myself, since I'm using a plugin which can apply them in bulk. Feel free to add more categories if you think I've missed an angle, though. --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:53, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
- oh wow that's great, cheers. i'll get to them in the next few days but feel free to add some categories with the plugin now. Adenosine Triphosphate (talk) 16:55, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
