Thank you for your comments in Lar's recent RfA!
[edit]Dear Alastor Moody: I would like to thank you for your support in my recent RfA which passed 20 to 1. I really appreciate the trust you've placed in me. Please help me be a better admin by giving me feedback when you think I need it, and praise when you think I've earned it. That you popped over here basically to support me and do a few other needful things is very gratifying. Please don't be a stranger. I look forward to working with you. ++Lar: t/c 04:47, 12 October 2006 (UTC) | |
I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together. |
Image Tagging Image:Hypothetical_exoplanet.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Hypothetical_exoplanet.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Image deletion warning | Image:2M1207 b.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:36, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

File movers
[edit]Hey, thanks for this edit. However, I've just made a modification to User filemover to allow for auto-categorisation. If the user in question has a babel box, just insert "filemover" as a new parameter (look at my userpage as an example). If they don't, just add the template wholesale, or leave a note on their talk page asking them to do so. If you have any questions, leave a note on my talk page. Cheers! — Huntster (t @ c) 11:24, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't mind you editing my page. However, I suggest writing up a notice and leaving it on the talk pages of those who don't have it set up. Some people don't like the infobox, some people just don't want to be categorised like that. It isn't a requirement, but often people just don't know it exists. — Huntster (t @ c) 09:13, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Acceptable image?
[edit]Absolutely not. Please look at the license of that image...it says "All rights reserved", which means the photographer has decided to hold the full copyright and not release the image under a free license. Look for images that say "Some rights reserved", and that aren't non-commercial and non-derivative. You can specifically search for these types of images on Flickr by performing a search, clicking on the "advanced search" option at top, and checking all three buttons in the Creative Commons section, then hitting the bottom "Search" button again. Also, I took a look for any Pauly D images that were properly licensed on Flickr, but there were none. — Huntster (t @ c) 11:40, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Renaming
[edit]I see that you have moved File:ഈഫൽ ഗോപുരത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മുകളിൽ.jpg to File:Antennas at the top of Eiffel tower.jpg. Please note that Commons is a multilingual project and so there's no reason to favor English over other languages as per Commons:File renaming. The initial name in Malayalam language was perfectly correct although it was not readable for non-Malayalam speakers. Thanks. --Sreejith K (talk) 11:51, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Whoops, sorry. Didn't recognize that it was a Malayalam language. On my computer, it looked by a bunch of unreadable square boxes. If you want, you can revert my decision. Cheers, —stay (sic)! 12:00, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Since the translation is proper, I would keep it the way it is right now. But it would be nice if you can update the unicode fonts in your machine --Sreejith K (talk) 12:03, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
For your information
[edit]Labelle
[edit]Hello A7x (or should I call you Snake311?) The reason why I wanted the Labelle1.jpg, Labelle2.jpg, Labelle3.jpg, Labelle4.jpg, Labelle5.jpg and Labelle6.jpg renamed is because of the misleading name: LABELLE is the french word for LABELLUM, which obviously has nothing to do with the actual name of these files. If you just tell me how I should proceed. Thnks. Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 03:24, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- The reason why I declined your request was because the stated reason was "more detailed information". While there is nothing wrong with having more detailed information on Commons, as a filemover, I am obliged to follow several guidelines regarding file renaming and moving. If a file's name is indeed misleading, then it is okay to be renamed. However to request for a rename just because the suggested name looks a bit better is not a valid reason under COM:FR#What files should be renamed?. After looking up what Labelle and Labellum means on Wikipedia, well I think that you're right. So I'll just go ahead and rename the files you've requested before. Cheers, —stay (sic)! 06:25, 14 July 2011 (UTC) (Btw, you can call me "A7x".)
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - first of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg,
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - second of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg,
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - third of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg,
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - fourth of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg,
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - fifth of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg,
- Done File:La Belle au Bois Dormant - Sixth of six engravings by Gustave Doré.jpg. I took the liberty and renamed it the way you wanted. Kind regards, —stay (sic)! 06:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. btw, would it make sense to put the requests forward as follows: example: File:John_Doe_at_concert.jpg, the 3 standing in this case for "correct misleading names into accurate ones" ? Lotje ʘ‿ʘ (talk) 12:41, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- No, that type of reason is too unclear, ambiguous for me and other filemovers to understand. A better way to put it would be "COM:FR#Reason 3" or simply copy-and-pasting "correct misleading names into accurate ones" as a reason. Sometimes when I find a file rename request, and I don't see a valid reason under the guidelines, I'm likely to decline or leave it, under the no valid reason argument. —stay (sic)! 15:30, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
