Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:39, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Moved from Japanese Wikipedia
--Sabuell (talk) 20:09, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
--aokomoriuta (talk) 01:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
--Sabuell (talk) 04:04, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

--RSSFSO (talk) 12:02, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
Kt Meursault (talk) 07:51, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
About Category:Beam support
[edit]I saw that you created Category:Beam support. I have some questions about it:
- Can you tell what Category:Beam support is about? Could you perhaps give a better description of it? Is it about supporting beams, or about beams that themselves are supporting something?
- Shouldn't there be one or more extra parent categories, something with support and/or architecture/construction?
- What kind of files are allowed here? Only drawings, or also photos of real situations?
JopkeB (talk) 13:09, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- @JopkeB:
- As you can see the categorized files, they are about structural support on beam theory, currently mainly (professional) figures. You can add a better description by your hand.
- I don't need them. I believe you know that "Beam support" is used only for beam theory. Beam theory is naturally categorized under some engineering.
- Permission is not my work. I am not the category owner (nor is anyone else on the Commons). You can propose the rule to the Commons community if you need it.
- aokomoriuta (talk) 20:51, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answers.
- Sorry, I have not so much knowledge about constructions, that I can see it (@1), that I can make a proper description (@1), nor that I know the first thing about beam theory (@2), and I guess a lot of people visiting Commons have neither. And I think Commons categories should be understandable for all visitors, even if they are about technical subjects. That is why I asked you these questions. Since it looks like you do have that knowledge, please:
- Would you make a more extensive description, explaining to visitors with less knowledge of the subject what this category is about? You do not have to explain the whole theory, just an indication of what this category is about, what should be in it and what not. No indeed, you are not the category owner, but you started it, have knowledge about it and can enlighten the rest of us. And I would appreciate that.

- I have received your request. I will try to make it when I have enough free time in the future. But making by your own hand could be a better choice to adapt to what/how you want to get (because we are in wiki). aokomoriuta (talk) 06:37, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I'll wait until you have time to make the description. JopkeB (talk) 15:35, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- Can you give me an indication of when you might have time to make a description? JopkeB (talk) 06:00, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know. As I said, DIY if you need. aokomoriuta (talk) 08:49, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

This discussion continues on Commons:Categories for discussion/2023/10/Category:Beam support. --JopkeB (talk) 04:01, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Beam support has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
