First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

ファイル名について

初めまして、Krorokeroroと申します。いつも御自身で撮影された画像をアップロードして頂き有難うございます。さて、本日の File:下りホームの跡 2023.jpg のファイル名について申し上げます。「下りホームの跡」ではどこの駅かわからなくなります。ほっきーさん御自身が鶴橋駅にこの画像を貼付していらっしゃいましたので、鶴橋駅の写真とわかりましたが、もしほっきーさんの編集を誰かが取り消すとか、誰か別の人が同様の題材で画像をアップロードしてウィキペディア鶴橋駅でこの写真を差し替えたりすると、せっかくほっきーさんがアップロードして下さった写真は、このウィキメディア・コモンズの膨大な画像の中に飲み込まれてしまいます。ほっきーさんが写されたこの画像は2023年7月の鶴橋駅の記録として大切なものだと思いますので、これからも資料として役に立つようファイルの名前については、そのものが何を指すのかをわかる名前にして頂ければと思います。ほっきーさんのファイルについては非常に差し出がましいのですが、わたしが改名依頼（移動依頼）をいたしました。ご了承下さりたく存じます。もし私の改名依頼が不適当であるとお思いなら、鶴橋駅であることがわかる別の名前で改名依頼（移動依頼）を出して頂ければと思います。よろしくお願い申し上げます。この度は画像をアップロードして頂いたことに改めて感謝申し上げます。--Krorokeroro (talk) 09:14, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

文字で書いてしまうと、ほっきーさんに一方的に注意しただけのようにみられます。日頃ほっきーさんが素晴らしい画像を撮影・アップロードして頂いていることには、これまでこの会話ページで感謝の意をお伝えしていませんでした。改めて見返せば直近でも File:焼岳小屋 2022.jpg や File:六三園 表門.jpg など素晴らしい写真を撮影・アップロードして下さっていることには、ただただ感謝申し上げるばかりです。素晴らしい写真をアップロードして下さっているのにこれまで感謝をお伝えせず、ちょっとファイル名に固有名詞を入れなかっただけで、こんな書き込みをしてしまう私自身を恥じております。要は「ファイル改名移動依頼をしました」とお伝えしたかったのですが、ただ注意するだけのように書いてしまったこと、自分の伝える力のなさに恥じ入るばかりです。御不快な思いをなさったのであれば、お詫び申し上げます。--Krorokeroro (talk) 09:27, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
