Using the wikis can be tricky. These tools will help in navigating, preparing descriptions, and adding categories to the images you place on Wikimedia Commons.

Tips and Tools for Use on the Commons

  • When preparing to upload images, do your category searches ahead of time. Use shorter file names from now on (Creative Commons asks its users to use the file name in attribution. Also, prepare your descriptions ahead of time in Notepad.
  • Attribution: Try to put title, creator, and cc licence.

Categories

 Categories: To place images into categories, upload the images following the usual steps, then enter the category titles, bulleted below. When entering them into the Categories field or box, you do not have to prefix the title by typing "Category:" Just enter the exact title and hit "Go." If the category exists, the media tool will pull it up for you. Try to search categories before before uploading.

Tip: Use existing categories whenever possible: the lowest "child" category you can find for each image. Don't use the "parent" (upper level) categories unless there is no subcategory that fits.
