  • In Roskilde Cathedral, a World Heritage Site in Denmark, 21 kings and 18 queens are buried in the main building and several chapels, which have been added in a diverse set of architectural styles over the years. One such chapel is Christian IX's Chapel, which was designed by the Danish architect Andreas Clemmensen (in Danish) and completed in 1924. Inside this Chapel is this dome, which is built in Neo-Byzantine style.

  • The southern part of Viborg, Denmark as seen from the east across Søndersø (Southern lake) by night. Viborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark, with Viking settlements dating back to the late 8th century. Some prominent buildings are mentioned in the annotations on the file page.

  • The observatorio Mojon del Trigo is an observatory, which was built in in 1902 and contained a 32 cm Cassegrain type KYOTO reflector telescope donated by Georgetown University. It is located in the vicinity of Pico del Veleta (3394m) in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Spain at a height of about 2600m. The observatory was abandoned in the 1970s and deterioated into a ruin as documented by our own Jebulon in 2010, who also was with me on this occasion (thanks for showing me this place!). Since then, the observatory has been restored and is today in good shape (as seen from the outside, at least, I have not been inside). Nearby is also barracks used by the Special Operations Command of Spain. Here, the observatory is seen in evening sun as viewed from nearby Monument of Our Lady of the Snows. From this view point, the modern Sierra Nevada Observatory established 1981 can also be seen, but in the opposite direction.

The barracks are located at an altitude of 2550 m in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The road A-395 in front shows the last public section of the 38 km long access road from Granada leading to Pico del Veleta, the second highest mountain in Sierra Nevada (3394 m). This is also the highest paved road in Europe.

  • A Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet taking off at Danish Air Show 2014. The F-18 is a seldom guest in Denmark, the last time it landed in the country was in 2009. This year it showed up at the Danish Air Show 2014 held at Air Base Karup with over 120,000 spectators (2% of the population). Probably because it is a candidate for a replacement of the existing fleet of 30 General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. The two other candidates are the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.

The street lightning is new (2010) and based on LEDs. Some facts according to "Viborg Nyt", Week 48, 1/12 - 7/12 2010 p. 25, Viborgs julebelysning tager hensyn til miljøet: Compared to the previous illumination used in 2009 and before, the LED-based lights will be lead to a reduction in cost for the electricity of 39000 DKK, savings in energy of 29,000 kWh, corresponding to 14.5 ton of CO2. The cost for setting up and putting down the illumination including transportation and VAT was over 500,000 DKK in 2009. The cost of the illumination itself is in excess of 1,000,000 DKK sponsored by the shop owners and Viborg Kommune. Perspective corrected using GIMP. A Manfrotto tripod was used. The pavement material shown was replaced in 2011 with granite bricks imported from China.

The mountain, which extends 270 m above sea level, is inhabited with Glacous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus). The white areas are bird droppings. The yellow areas are lichen (probably Caloplaca and Xanthoria) adapted to the nutritious environment. The image has been generated using Hugin based on 17 individual photos arranged in three rows. The images were taken with a hand-held camera (Canon DIGITAL IXUS 800 IS) in a small boat that was slowly drifting (not optimal, but it was too deep to anchor). Vignetting has been minimized using a best fit polynomial in Hugin. The output image from Hugin has been rectangularly cropped in GIMP. The colour value curve has been modified slightly to compensate for over-exposure in certain white areas. Hereafter the photo has been Smart Sharpened with a pixel radius of 3.0 and an amount of 30%. the inverted edge detected mask was used in RGB to apply a selective gaussian blur with pixel radius 5.0 of the sky in an attempt to remove noise there. "Missing sky" in the upper left corner has been pasted in by simple colour picking and painting (do not know other methods).
