DRI?

[edit]

Excuse my ignorance but about your question on Image:Tower_Bridge_London_Feb_2006.jpg, What's a DRI picture? Thanks. Francisco M. Marzoa 13:28, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Dont excuse yourself. Its nice to share knowledge. DRI stands fo Dynamic Range Increase. The idea is to take 3 or more photos from the same object with different exposures and make one photo out of them. Here some examples: [[1]] Simonizer 06:50, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Interesting. I sometimes use bracketing to get different expositions and select the best one, but I've never combined two pictures with different values. I'll give it a try someday.

Thanks for your comments on my pictures. Francisco M. Marzoa 11:42, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

FP

[edit]

May I suggest you nominate 'Luzern old part of town.JPG' in the featured pictures? I think it is a really good picture and I would support it. --Digon3 21:14, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

At the very least it should be a Quality picture. Hope others like it like I do. --Digon3 17:02, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Would you mind if I nominated it on wikipedia for featured picture? --Digon3 15:58, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Congradulations on your featured picture! --Digon3 13:44, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Second Severn Crossing pano

[edit]

Hi Simonizer -
Thanks for your comment on my image at FPC. I was wondering, could you provide any suggestions as to how I could have improved the composition of this image? I'm keen to improve my photography and would welcome constructive input. Vielen Dank, --Yummifruitbat 23:53, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Quality Images

[edit]

I was looking over some of your pictures and some of them are good enough for Quality Images. I would suggest Hainberg will get wet.JPG, Kapellbruecke.JPG, Arnisee Lake.JPG, Lake near Sunnig Grat summit.JPG, Landscape Arnisee-region.JPG, Hainberg-07-08-06047.JPG. Dont do them all at once :) --Digon3 13:51, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

By the way, do you know how to make babelboxes (also called userboxes)? --Digon3 13:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

FP try?

[edit]
  • I like your picture Image:View over adirondack park.JPG very much though it is doubtful its promotion to FP for lack of a clear subject (and the presence of a pink halo in the arc brim, but that you can correct). I would give it a try... Alvesgaspar 11:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks for your comment on this picture. Do you have a advice for me how to correct this picture without destroying it? I´ve tried some correction filters of GIMP but that doesnt work so far
  • I am quite new to digital editing and not the best guy to ask for advice on that matter. I would try the clone tool to remove the halo manually, replacing it with portions of sky. But maybe there is a better and quicker way. Alvesgaspar 13:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I have corrected the picture - Simonizer 12:49, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Yes, I think you got it. But I also want to learn: how did you do it? As for the FP status, that is a quite personal opinion, the picture reminds me of a painting by René Magritte. But I suspect, as I told you, that not everybody will agree. Regards, Joaquim Alvesgaspar 12:56, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I took the liberty of nominating this for FP after seeing it at QI, hope you dont mind. Gnangarra 09:36, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Proposal: Picture of the Year and Picture of the Month contests

[edit]

I have posted a new proposal on Commons talk:Featured picture candidates regarding the creation of FP-related contests and would like your feedback on the idea. This message is being sent to some of the regular contributors to Commons:Featured picture candidates. Alvesgaspar 16:11, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Your Image PortoCovoJan07-5.jpg

[edit]

Dear Joaquim, I have made an Edit of your lovely picture. I think the picture profits alot of this crop. In this form, I would support it at FP. What do you think about it? Greetings, your Simonizer 12:47, 9 January 2007 (UTC

Thank you for your interest and help. You might well be right, go ahead and insert a new version! Alvesgaspar 12:50, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Ambitions...

[edit]

Don't you guess? I can't believe. However some improvements might be needed... Greetings from Lisbon - Alvesgaspar 14:15, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

POTY election implementation

[edit]

Some help in needed to organize the POTY election. Please check the conclusions of the discussion in Commons talk:Featured picture candidates. What do you think of doing the election in the period 15-31 January? - Alvesgaspar 14:27, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

QI discussion

[edit]

There is an important discussion going on here which might result in a snowball with unwanted results. Although I agree that the actual QI guidelines should be tuned up, I can't support a considerable degrading of the existing criteria, towards some "poor man's QI" model. - Alvesgaspar 14:48, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Picture of the Year - still on?

[edit]

There has been little traffic on Commons:Picture of the Year/2006 recently. Are we still going to do this? If so, we need to decide the dates of the first and second rounds of voting, and make sure everything is ready to go (by 1st Feb?) I'm happy to help, but wouldn't want to do this on my own if no-one else has much interest. --MichaelMaggs 12:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I have done some noise reduction. Can you please review it again? Greetings from Germany, Simonizer 13:25, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I would also try to downsample the picture, the noise is still too visible.

Another matter: would you please give your opinion on the PotY Gallery? We still aren't sure on the best way to do it and the time is now short. Alvesgaspar 14:39, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it is much better, the noise was gone. What software is that? I'm from the "old school" and don't even have Photoshop... Alvesgaspar 09:57, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, Simon, not being a fortune-teller, I would say that at leat one of them could have a chance. Ask me no more... - Alvesgaspar 14:45, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

POTY 2006

[edit]

The arrangements for the Commons Picture of the Year 2006 competition are now complete, and voting will start tomorrow, Feb 1st. All the featured pictures promoted last year are automatically nominated. As the creator of one or more images nominated for the election we invite you to participate in the event. Alvesgaspar 12:10, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you

[edit]

Thank you Simon, that was sweet of you. I think POTY 2006 will be a sucess, just look at the voting list! - Alvesgaspar 09:48, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your thanks! --MichaelMaggs 10:00, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Abandoning the POTY 2006 project

[edit]

I’m abandoning the project. I don’t deserve, and can’t tolerate, to be treated like an intruder or a vandal. Have fun and thank you for your support, Simon. Alvesgaspar 13:42, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Out of town again

[edit]

Simon, I'll be leaving town tomorrow for a short vacation, with no access to the Internet. Will you please take care of the FP candidates page? - regards, Alvesgaspar 23:10, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Good morning Simon. Would you mind to continue doing the job, I'm a little busy now? Alvesgaspar 10:25, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

You previously voted in the FP candidacy of Image:Male and female superb fairy wren.jpg. This image has now been nominated for removal of its FP status. If you have not already done so, you might like to join the discussion at Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/Image:Male and female superb fairy wren.jpg. I'm notifying both pro and anti-voters. --MichaelMaggs 16:18, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Nomination, Swan

[edit]

Hello Simonizer,

No. I certainly don't mind that you nominated the swan picture for FP. On the contrary. It was a very nice surprise to see it there and getting support, as I happened to be couple of days off-line and wasn't even aware of the nomination before today. Thank you very much. --Thermos 15:27, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for nominating the swan picture as a FP candidate. Apparently it was selected as one. Many thanks. --Thermos 15:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Overexposed foam

[edit]

Yes, the surf foam is overexposed in those pictures, but I don't think it is possible to do it otherwise without ruining the whole thing. We can adjust the tone curve in order to darken those parts but the result is a poorly contrasted picture. I edited the one with the fisherman a little bit, Image:Foz do Arelho MAR07-1.JPG, what do you think? As for the one with the bench, I have another version: Image:Porto Covo FEV07-3.JPG. Alvesgaspar 19:36, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

If you want to take another look, I found a larger version and removed some of the noise. ~ trialsanderrors 03:03, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for nominating my picture. I love it, the girl standing on the Salar is my 10 years old daughter. --LucaG 19:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Beleidigung?

[edit]

Ciao. --Nino Barbieri 08:12, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Honoured and touched to be in your list!

[edit]

While voting for your last picture, I happened on your list of favorite photographers at Commons.

I'm happy to see you like my work but I'm certainly not enough experienced to be in the same list with photographers like Luc Viatour and Mdf.

Now I must work hard to deserve to remain in this list. Thank you so much. --LucaG 21:29, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Can you help me ?

  • Hi Joaquim. Can you resume the FP Closing process for a couple of days. Iam very bussy at the moment and additional iam on tour at the weekend. I can go on with the FP closing next week from Tuesday on.

Thanks! --Simonizer 07:40, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Of course, Simon, though I can't promise to be very regular. Just tell me one thing: are the pics already closed, but which remain in the page, have been fully processed (msg to author, log, FP archives, etc.)? - Alvesgaspar 08:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Quick closing

[edit]

Good morning Simon,

I think you have closed some nominations a little too soon. This one (ends at 23:07) and also this one ends at 15:09) are delicate cases because with some luck, they may still be promoted. - Alvesgaspar 07:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Colosseum in Rome

[edit]

I have received the following message from Vassil and agree with the proposed change. What do you think? - Alvesgaspar 17:41, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I've uploaded a new version of "Colosseum in Rome-April 2007" by Diliff under the name:"Colosseum in Rome-April 2007-1- 2D.jpg" in the category:Colosseum. In this version,I've smoothed out compression artifacts that were appeared in the sky in my edited version 2B.Please,could you look at the new version, and if you think that quality is good enough, transfer the featured picture template to this one? I shall ask for the deletion of the 2B version.Sincerely yours.Vassil 2 June 2007.

FP Promotion

[edit]

With regards to Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Green carabidae-1.jpg, the rules clearly state that "Two different versions of the same picture cannot both be featured, but only the one with the higher score of votes.". Both images in this nom are not different versions of the same picture, but different pictures entirely. Thus they should both be featured. The rules do not state that each image being nominated must be on a separate subpage. Please consider this image promoted. -- Ram-Man 22:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks.

  • Hey Joaquim! Congratulations to your new camera. I wish you a lot of nice pictures with it. What lense(s) have you bought with it? --Simonizer 07:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Thank you, Simon. So you noticed, I bought it less than 24 houts ago!... For the moment I only have a cheap second-hand 35-70 lens. I'm waiting for the Nikon 18-200 VR. - Alvesgaspar 08:44, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
  • The lens is out of stock, as usual. That means I'll have to wait to the end of my vacancies, in july, to re-order it. You seem to have made a good choice, with your Tokina 100/2,8 Macro. I'll see what the 18-200 is capable of in macro shots before buying a specialized one. Alvesgaspar 13:05, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Thank you for your advice. I'll have the opportunity to apply the "scientific method" to my new camera and do some experiments during the vacancies. From 7-13, next month, I'll be here, more or less near you. - Alvesgaspar 20:41, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Yes, what a coincidence! From Berne I'll go directly to Porto Covo, in the coast of Portugal, for my beach vacancies. But I don't have internet there, sorry. Maybe MichaelMaggs is available to help in the FPC closing. Alvesgaspar 12:38, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I should think so. I haven't done it before, but no doubt there are some clear instructions somewhere ... Or I'll just figure it out. Have a good break both of you. --MichaelMaggs 21:48, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit]

Good morning Simon, Yes, I am in the first and second pictures, and also in here and here (maybe I'm breaking some non-written Wikipedia rule?...). What about your stay in Switzerland, are you going to show us your wonderful nature photos ? - Alvesgaspar 10:15, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Bush cricket

[edit]

Excellent composition (as usual) and detail, I also prefer the first version. If you can bring a little more light to the body of the cricket it would be perfect.

Funny, I am also tempted by a second-hand Tokina lens, an AT-X AF 100mm Macro. I believe this is the old version of your own lens. How much did it cost? - Alvesgaspar 17:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry Simon, I didn't notice it was a new version of the cricket. Yes, it is much better, will you give it a try (though the 'insect bar' appears to be quite high now)?... - Alvesgaspar 09:21, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I already have my "new second-hand" Tokina, yeah! But it is so windy in Lisbon that I was not yet able to use it outdoors... News expected in the following days! Alvesgaspar 12:20, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

NZ is not Ausy

[edit]

Just a little big-brother/little-brother rivalry we have no make sure that we don't get subsumed into our bigger neighbour (just like Canada is not part of the USA). Interestingly NZ sits astride two tectonic plates, one part (part of the south island) is on the same plate as Australia and is slowly moving north, over taking the north island which is on the pacific plate :-). "Australasia" is often used to include both countries and some other islands, also "Oceania" usually includes both and most south pacific islands and some islands over towards Asia (all very confusing really :-) --Tony Wills 09:41, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Can you make more bright? It is too dark I think. --Beyond silence 00:56, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Shooting RAW

[edit]

Hi Simon,

Finally I decided to follow your advice and started to work with RAW files. My last darters where shot that way. But frankly I can't see any relevant difference between a very fine jpeg and a raw, both taken from the camera. Another problem is to read and process the pics. I will have Capture NX (from Nikon) for only two more weeks, before the evaluation licence expires. Do you know of any good free application or of a add-on for Corel Photo Paint? What about your Swiss pictures? Regards, Alvesgaspar 11:11, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

  • Wow for your Mittlist Gfael photos! Yes, I remeber it was (almost) always raining during the time I was in Berne. Alvesgaspar 11:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Simon, You know I am a fan of your carefully prepared pictures. This one is no exception but it is indeed too dark. Here is an edited version. I have slightly increased the saturation of yellows and greens in the brightest parts, so it appears like the sun rays are iluminating them. I'll nominate it in FPC if you allow me. Newbie FP question

[edit]

Hi Simonizer. I noticed that voting on my Nunâ island panorama has ended with the conclusion that it is featured - with your tag on. It is my first FP, so I am new to the process, but I noticed in the instructions on what to do after voting is only done partially (You've concluded on COM:FPC and added the FP template to the photo, but it is not in the lists on COM:FP). Am I supposed to do the last steps myself, or is it just because you are in the middle of a parallel process with several FPs? -- Slaunger 20:56, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Simonizer, thanks for taking a look at this image. Do you know how to get rid of such stains using, for example, Gimp? Thanks for your time, AFBorchert 22:44, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Hallo Simonizer, vielen Dank für den Tipp. Ich habe jetzt mal mein Glück damit probiert und eine revidierte Fassung hochgeladen. Könntest Du bitte noch einmal ein Blick auf das Bild werfen? Vielen Dank, wieder etwas gelernt :) Grüße, AFBorchert 14:42, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Where to buy photo equipment in Germany

[edit]

Hi Simon,

I saw your picture of Lac Blanc on QI (and unfortunately voted against sorry ;) ) and now wonder if you live nearby Alsace ? Because Sanchezn -who is from there- and I are looking for some place in Germany where to buy serious tripods (we found out it was much cheaper over there). I wonder if you could tell us if there is a shop in Freiburg (or anything else around) or where to start searching ? Our googling wasn't much succesful :(.

FYI, the model we'd like to get is a Velbon Sherpa CF 535. It can be found at around 200 euros in Germany and 350 in France.

Thanks in advance, and I hope this doesn't bother you... :) Benh 21:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

  • OOps, I've just read that you are from Nuremberg area... sorry for not being more careful. Benh 10:04, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Merci beaucoup ! (sorry don't speak german :( ). Actually, I found german internet websites but wanted to find a real store instead since I may go to Alsace with Sanchezn. I still don't trust that much those websites, but think I'll give a try to the one you showed me since you told me it worked for you. Looking forward to see more of your pics ;) Benh 13:23, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi! -- Cecil 17:08, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

This is clearly a support (I just forgot the pour). This picture should have been a very banal (I am not sure this word is English) postcard and with this cloud it is avery original picture. Romary 21:28, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Auvergne

[edit]

I do not know what your are looking for hollydays, but Auvergne is a very nice region. Specially if you like countryside, hiking and old roman church. It a mountain area (not very high) with old volcanoes (see : Category:Chaîne des Puys, Category:Puy de Sancy, little more south than where I live but still in Auvergne : Category:Monts du Cantal) fields and forest. The food is good specially the cheese (Saint Nectaire, Cantal etc). In winter, you can sky. But when I see where you live, this is probably not really a good spot for you. You have far better close to you home. There are plenty of other things. If you want more info, let me know. Romary 08:48, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Auvergne

[edit]

Hi,

The area I would propose : the Sancy area which seems to fit with what you like.

You got pictures of the Puy ("mountain" in the local language)itself: Category:Puy de Sancy and of the area in general (called Mont Dore, There is also a town named Le Mont-Dore): Category:Monts Dore. So this is a very nice area where you have lakes, mountains, Forest, Castle, cheese etc A good pratical advise would be to stay in the village of Murol where you have several camping (make reservation) (you can contact the "office du tourisme": http://www.tourisme.fr/tourist-office/murol.htm see also http://www.sancy.com/default-a.php). The advantage is that you are very close to the Sancy area but you are close to the chaîne des puys which is also a very nice area to visit. Apparently you like to swim o there is near Murol a lake : lac Chambon. Also if you want to hike this a perfect place either in the Sancy area and in the chaîne des puys. there are a lots of hiking guides (unfortunately only in French but all the hiking tour are very weel indicated on the tracks) :

On each of these pages click on "localiser" on the right hand side on the top you'll see a map

Lots of places to make pictures. I hope that give you a good idea of the possibilties.

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the photographers barsnstar award you gave me and the invitation to Mop. I'm not entirely sure how to go about that, I make an user:benjamint444/profile page using the same HTML from the others and then where do I add it to? Thanks again for the star. Tokina 12-24mm f4

[edit]

It's a very nice and very fun lens, so long as you understand its limitations, most of which I don't care much about. I don't actually own the lens, but I do borrow it as often as I can. Many wide angle lenses suffer from flare, and the lens I use has a single coated UV filter on the front. I highly recommend using a multi-coated UV filter on the front to cut down on flare. Obviously, flare depends on where the sun is relative to the lens, but it is the most annoying problem I've had. Since it isn't my lens, I just work around the flare and it doesn't keep me from taking nice pictures. It's not internally focused, so it's a bit noisy and somewhat slow focusing, but since wide angle lenses focus reasonably well anyway (and usually work well in manual focus settings), this is only a minor annoyance. The sharpness is great and the distortion is trivial to correct in photoshop (unlike the other wide angle options from other manufacturers), and these two are most important to me. Tokina's tend to have higher Chromatic Aberration than other lenses, and this seems to be the case with this lens, but that doesn't bother me. The only time it actually matters is when nominating them for FPs where people are excessively picky sometimes. I wouldn't choose whether or not to buy a lens because of FP nominations. Since I just pointed out all its weaknesses, I do plan to buy that lens myself sometime in the future because I love it so much. The only other lens I'd consider would be the Nikon, but since it's twice as expensive I'm never going to get it when the Tokina is perfectly fine for real-world usage. Another minor point: sometimes I wish it could focus closer, but in my opinion it does a really good job at close focusing (1:8), something that is uncommon/difficult in wide angle lenses. -- Ram-Man 17:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
