Simmaren was born in 1949, lives in Chicago, Illinois, and is an attorney with a large law firm specializing in state and local government law, finance and banking. He has particular interests in science fiction (has been reading actively since 1960); the novels of Jane Austen and Patrick O'Brien (both in media res); Samuel Johnson and Enlightenment England generally; the history, culture and society of ancient Greece and Rome and ancient and modern China and Japan; renaissance and Baroque music; jazz; anime; science and technology; and contemporary culture and politics. Simmaren studied French and Chinese and majored in East Asian Studies/History in college. Simmaren likes to hike and (formerly) to backpack in the mountains of the Western United States. He also paddles canoes and sea kayaks with his family. He became a WP:User on February 14, 2007 and a WC:User somewhat later.
