Vereya is a historic small town in Naro-Fominsky district of Moscow Oblast, Russia, around 100 kilometers west from the center of Moscow.

Symbols

Верея (Vereya), is an archaic Russian word for a wooden post or column supporting the gate. The coat of arms, granted in 1782, features two such posts with gates and golden hinges "as befitting the name of the town".

Geography

Protva River

Vereya was founded on the right-hand (southern) side of the Protva River.

Vereya Citadel

The wooden Kremlin (citadel) was built on a steep hill between the Protva and the present-day main square. No fortifications survived to date.
