UNESCO produces publications and other text available under an open license that can be copied into Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Adding text from external sources to Wikimedia projects is not yet standardised please see below for instructions for each project:

When copying text from UNESCO publications please also include the citations that are used in the usual way.


UNESCO publications


UNESDOC is the the central repository for UNESCO open license publications, you are free to use text from any publication that carries the CC-BY-SA logo on their description page e.g the description page for Atlas of the World Languages in Danger.

The majority of new publications produced by UNESCO are available under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license and so can be used both as references and using the text directly on Wikipedia. Please check at the start of the document for the license, instructions for reusing text are available above. The newest UNESCO publications on the major UNESCO themes are available below:

Note: Some publications carry a Non Derivative (ND) or Non Derivative (ND) requirements, these are not compatible with Wikimedia projects, please do not use text from these documents. The description page for the publication carries the correct license, some documents have been released under an open license after their publication so will not include the correct license within the document. Please do not upload images from UNESCO publications to Wikimedia Commons, not all are available under an open license. Work is being done to upload media used in publications in high resolution.

Once you have added a section of text to Wikipedia please remove it from the list and add it to the Used table below.. Alternatively if the text is unusable add it to the Not Used table. Please also add links to any new articles created from other Wikipedia articles so it can be more easily found, articles without links from other articles are referred to as 'orphans'.

Biosphere Reserves promote solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use, today there are 669 biosphere reserves in 120 countries belonging to a World Network of Biosphere Reserves. UNESCO has made descriptions of the Biosphere Reserves available under a Wikimedia compatible license to help create Wikipedia articles about the sites, click here to help create new articles.
