Gerhard K. Heilig was the the Chief of the Population Estimates and Projections Section at the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) from 2006 to 2013. The Population Estimates and Projections Section at the UN Population Division is responsible for preparing the "World Population Prospects" and the "World Urbanization Prospects". These population estimates and projections for all countries of the world are used throughout the United Nations System and by many international organizations, such as the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Health Organization (WHO) or the World Food Organization (FAO). The data are also used by academic researchers and the media.
