A few pointers to avoid confusion about this page:

  • If in any doubt about what scientific racism is, please read the Wikipedia article.
  • People uploading and accurately describing historic scientific racism material is within project scope, creating new material that promotes false theories of modern scientific racism is not. Words like "Caucasoid", "Negroid" and "Mongoloid" used to describe human races is not supported by modern science as biologically there is only one human race.
  • Scientific racism may be used to justify current claims of there being a superior white race, or more intelligent yellow race, this is considered racist.

This page has been created to supplement COM:AN discussion about images which:

  1. are derived works where the user created version promotes scientific racism and misrepresents the source(s)
  2. have been titled or described on their image pages in ways that promote scientific racism
  3. user created original research which promotes scientific racism and may be considered to have negative educational value

For more information and example cases of cross-wiki promotion of scientific racism refer to m:Talk:Black Lives Matter#Images promoting modern scientific racism.

Example after repairs. Crop redone taking full, more dignified, portrait rather than 'mugshot' style. File renamed to match text, which never used "Mongoloid".

Cases

[edit]
  1. Neighbor-joining Tree-2.png (GU) inserted cross-wiki into articles that were about the type of graph 'neighbor joining tree', but misleadingly included race words in the diagram. The file is a user created derivative of Neighbor-joining Tree.svg which does not use any historic race words. This is deliberate unnecessary promotion of modern scientific racism. Diagram re-named to make it clearer, but removing from Wikipedias has to be done case by case, and so may never be completed.
Renamed Neighbor-joining Tree-2, falsely promoting scientific racism by using Negroid, Mongoloid and Australoid
Variation of the same file, same issues: Árbol de uniéndose de vecinos.png renamed to Árbol de uniéndose de vecinos, falsely promoting scientific racism by using Negroid, Mongoloid and Australoid
  2. File:Mongoloid skull Huxley.png copy from Huxley's 1890 work, but in the text the skull is described as "Calmuck" (i.e. Kalmyks) with no use of race words directly about the diagram. Huxley's book may use "Mongoloid" but it is not justified in the file name, being down to the choice of the uploader. Initially the file was uploaded with a Japanese name which translates as "Kalmyk skull Mongoloid race".
Renamed to the title used in the source book Side and front views of the skull of a Calmuck.png
  3. Malay Tamil mix Mongoloid Australoid Caucasoid.png copy from Herman Lundborg 1921, but checking the source text the several photographs on Fig.31 are not described as "Mongoloid" or "Australoid" or "Caucasoid".
Renamed to File:Hybrid types of the human race, Journal of Heredity 1921, page 279 fig 31 photo 21 (IA journalheredity09assogoog).png matching the source identity on Internet Archive.
(Photo 22) Malay Tamil mix 2 Mongoloid Australoid Caucasoid.png renamed to File:Hybrid types of the human race, Journal of Heredity 1921, page 279 fig 31 photo 22 (IA journalheredity09assogoog).png
  4. Tungus Mongoloid Blumenbach.png race word used in filename and text when examining the original 16th C. source (in latin) the word was not used in conjunction with the two figures presented.
Renamed to De generis humani varietate nativa, Fig 1 (IA b2851886x).png and source pages from the full source book added as a gallery.
  5. División mapa raza amerindio grupos indio americano nativo genético ADN.png and Genetic group American Native American DNA subrace.png
Renames to División mapa amerindio grupos indio americano nativo genético ADN.png and Genetic group American Native.png to remove "raza" and "subrace", as tribes are not human races.
  6. File:Young Osage Warrior Mongoloid American Indian skull.png source text simply describes the skull as "Osage".
Renamed to Crania americana, plate 41 (IA Craniaamericana00Mort).png, matching book title and removing unjustified use of 'Mongoloid'.
  7. A lot of small badly done crops (looking like criminal mugshots) within Category:Figures from The races of man which unnecessarily, and apparently to cause offence, call every portrait by race words or caste names, though the captions don't justify it.
  8. Crops from Jenks, 1916
