Duplicates - User talk:Marcelloo

[edit]

Hi Deadstar,

Thanks for the advice, I'll do so when I'll have time.

Unfortunately Marcelloo, obvously a new young colleague, has flooded the Category: Musée Royal de l'Armée with a tsunami of detail-pictures. The necessary cleanup will take a lot of time.--Szilas 09:28, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi Deadstar! Thank you for your message for the duplicate images. You can actually go ahead for all those below. I am re-uploading one today under a new file name format (Image:WwwrktanitimcomAglayanKayaWeepingNiobeRockManisaTurkey.jpg). My worry is that I still haven't received a response to copyright holder's permission e-mail I had forwarded to permissions@wikimedia.org on 27 Nov and it's always better to have their confirmation. I will keep one until that permission unless you have a better suggestion (such as I re-send you or someone you may direct me a copy of the e-mail). Regards, .--Cretanforever

kisstomi

[edit]

Hi, I am addressing you about this picture: Image:Kisstomiburumbator.JPG. There was a deletion request in mid-September last year by Alensha, my very good admin friend from the Huwiki. I was out, never looked so deeply, and you guys kept this picture, for which I am very grateful! But she was no vandal, she was acting on my request, but failed to inform me about her action, so I could have entered my message: the picture could be deleted, it is not used, and I do not think that its presence will in any way contribute to the effectiveness and professionality of Wikipedia. If you agree, I would not start a deletion discussion, would kindly ask you transfer my message to an admin (if you are not one -- sorry :) ). Thank you very much! All the best, --Burumbator 15:31, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I have listed it, thanks. I take care of the wikibooks entry, I actually forgot that I have also registered there. :) Thanks again! --Burum Science Club 12:59, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Leone XIII

[edit]

Excuse me, Deadstar, i'm not confident with Commons mechanisms, and so I make a lot of mistakes. About Leone XIII, I reached that images I uploaded aren't good I supposed. So I have to recreate them and re-uploaded, so I put the tag for deletion. I hope this is enough, you can delete them now, I'll re-upload in a better way. See you soon, bye --Aubrey 14:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Forgive me for my bad english, maybe I didn't explain well. You can delete all the images with the deletion tag, but the first one, Image:Leone XIII - Rosario - Copertina.jpeg.
I haven't uploaded the new images yet, I have to prepare them. If you delete the old ones I'll upload the new ones with the same name. --Aubrey 17:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the help and kindness. I have thought to re-upload because I need good images for Italian wikisource. There we have to align texts and images, so I need right scans ;-)
Good work, I'll contact you if I need to. Bye (slogged Aubrey) 13:39, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

The video is about a "telepathy" and has no links.

Logo Image

[edit]

Hi Dear Deadstar:

Just to ask you 2 questions. I'm a criminologist, I wrote a wiki for Quadernos de Criminologia, The Magazine of Spanish Forensic Sciences Society and Criminology. So I was thinking in publish the logo on its wiki which was provided by his director. What sort of licence should I have to choose for the image? Also, I interviewed Robert Ressler (FBI Profiler's living legend) and was thinking in translate his wiki into spanish. Can I do it myself or do I have to ask for permission somewhere? Thank's a lot

--mlqu (talk) 10:39, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mlqu - I am not sure what logo you are talking about? If it is a logo of your own making, you can use any license. If it is a wiki logo, check what the image page specifies. And "his wiki" for Robert Ressler - not sure again what you mean. If you interviewed him yourself, you can translate that into as many languages as you like. -- Deadstar (msg) 21:08, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks / more help needed please

[edit]

Thanks for nuking my erroneously-created Pentastar page. However, now I find myself facing the same problem I set out to correct. When I put Pentastar into the search field, I get three low-quality images and one moderate-quality one. The two high-quality images I contributed awhile ago, Image:ChryPly_Blue_Pentastar.jpg and Image:Dodge_Red_Pentastar.jpg, do not show up. Likewise, why does Image:62Lancer.jpg show up when Dodge Lancer is entered in the search field, but Image:1962Lancer_F34.jpg does not? They're both "category:Dodge Lancer". There must be something fundamental that I'm misunderstanding about how to categorise images so they'll show up when their subject is searched upon. I've read the help files here, but so far no "Aha!" moment. Can you please assist & explain? Thanks! —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 14:41, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, yeah - that's a bit odd. I *think* that this has to do with a delay in indexing. The images you mention haven't been on Commons for long, so perhaps that's the problem. But I will need to check as I'm not the most technical person around. BTW creating the "Pentastar" gallery (which you tried to start with) is a great idea if you want to show off the best (or all) images within a category. Type in "Rome" for instance - it'll immediately direct you to the gallery (but again, might have to do with indexing). Anyway - I'll check and see. -- Deadstar (msg) 14:52, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Howdy. I had that same indexing thought, but surely it can't take days for new images to be indexed. Minutes or hours or maybe one day, but not more than that, just going by how everything else works everywhere else on Wikipedia. As for starting a gallery, I'd love to learn how. —Scheinwerfermann (talk) 20:17, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
I asked at the helpdesk as the admin I asked privately doesn't seem to know either. When searching on Pentastar, I now get "Showing below results 1 - 5 of 5" with 4 images below it? Hm. As for galleries: click here. To create a gallery, put names of images (without linking) between <gallery></gallery> and that should do it. Add a category to make it easier to find. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:34, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Seems that there's no easy answer as I've not heard from anywhere what the problem might be. I see you've created the gallery page anyways so I'd say the immediate issue is solved - your images can now be found :). Let me know if there's anything else. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:34, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Renaming

My apologies. I suggested renaiming articles that you already had put to rename. I saw that you weren't a trusted user, but I didn't realize you were an administrator. No harm done, anyway. Keep the good work doing! Greetings, Jordi Roqué (Discussió/Talk) 17:26, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

No worries - same happened to me once too :). You could add {{user trusted}} to your page to let others know about your status. I know that refers to Flickr mostly, but I can't seem to find the non-flickr one (I'm sure I saw it somewhere...) Anyway. Thanks for your help in renaming - only 540 to go... -- Deadstar (msg) 09:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Rename media

[edit]

Hi, I see that you had to improve on some for the renames I signed in July (they failed, for lack of .jpg in the target names).

  1. Is there a way to check "bad" renaming-trials I-myself might have done at that period? Of course, I'd prefer to repair myself any damage I caused.
  2. I changed my username not long ago and I am not sure whether the bot would follow.
  3. I've heard that there still are quite some issues about that MediaMoveBot. Is it still true that renames would force admins more often than not to interfere, because the bot creates problems (within boxes, for instance) and is/was blocked on enWP? It is about a cleanup project in an artist category, so I want to make up my mind before I might start requesting renames of some 300+ images which might cause a lot of work to someone else (in which case I'd be more than reluctant to do so). See Category_talk:Vincent_van_Gogh#Abstract, and, preferably, comment there.
Thanks, Wolfgang (talk) 17:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Is there some schedule for the bot to be operated? It would be useful to know whether next action happens tomorrow, or after 3 weeks. Wolfgang (talk) 17:27, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi Wolfgang. You are asking the same questions I asked when I started a cleanup operation of the "failed renames/renames needing target etc.", but didn't really find an answer. So as far as I know, I don't think there is a way to check "bad" renaming commands. If your name is on the trusted user list (and "W." is), and if you format it correctly, there shouldn't be a problem. As for question number 3 -- I'm not aware of any problems with the bot but that might just be ignorance on my part rather than there not being any issues. As for when/how often it runs - I'd love to know too. I left a message here but didn't get an answer. Last time it ran was at the end of last month (I think it was the 28th) so it's not weekly/biweekly anyway... Sorry I can't be of more help! I'll see if I have anything to add to the Van Gogh debate (but am short on time at the moment). -- Deadstar (msg) 19:09, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. My experience, in ~July, was similar to what you report.
On change of username: I had this-actual-username (which I hopefully will be able to keep) adapted to the list, 1 day ago. So, I'm not sure, whether "approvements" which I did under my former username would still be valid, and, if possible, had liked to repair such cases. It is anyways not more than a couple of items, because I also tried to get informed by the owner of the bot BEFORE doing major changes, and was not successful, and then stopped adding "renames".
More (actually:MOST) important: I'd be more than pleased if you'd comment on "my favourite baby" ;) it is about filenames, file descriptions, NOT really about ONE artist. tx, Wolfgang (talk) 21:12, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
I see. I would do a few with the new username and wait for it to run before doing any major work (you're right being cautious I think). And I commented on a few things over at the Van Gogh project. A lot of work gone in already I see! -- Deadstar (msg) 21:38, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Right you are ;)) -- it however would have been interesting to know in advance whether THAT bot would pass by once, twice or three times before christmas ;)))
Besides, the major work will be the optimizing of the descriptions, which would be by far more complicated to do if the renames cannot be done BEFORE: Have a look at Category:Paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the Musée d'Orsay -- F.I.V.E items of same painting! Wolfgang (talk) 22:15, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

!! Rename bot ran today -- Deadstar (msg) 20:02, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Nice-to-know ;) By-far-more interesting would be, to me, to know within what periods-of-time I can expect it to be run again - I just now asked his owner ;) -- before starting some "bigger" RENAME action, I'd anyways primarily have to wait for more feedback on design of file names -- one major contributor to COM seem to seriously disagree with my proposal, and I disagree with him. So, before this talk is not satisfyingly "DONE", any changes of file names might almost do more harm to the project than help it [by causing manpower and server time waist). See Category_talk:Vincent_van_Gogh#Talk_on_File_names.

Failed renames

[edit]

I just noticed that these renames all failed....because a bot or a non trusted user was the last person/thing to make an edit on the image file just before the rename bot ran:

I see 200+ failed renames in this category alone here like this: Image:081024-N-5783F-001.jpg or Image:Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola - Madonna with the Long Neck.jpg What a pity. These are some nice images here. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:59, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Hiya, yeah I know - that cat was filled with 500+ images before it was cleared for this bot run. I am working on it. -- Deadstar (msg) 10:00, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the help on Kto. Just one suggestion: please feel free to place a new rename request on the images I listed above if possible. You have speedily deleted Image:Elektrozavodskaya1950s.jpg as "copyvio". Lupo nominated it for deletion on the grounds that source site [8] has copyright notice. Actually the source page says "Copyright © 1996—2008 Артемий Лебедев" and has number of color photos by ru:Артемий Лебедев (Artemy Lebedev, born 1975), and one b/w photo which is Image:Elektrozavodskaya1950s.jpg dated to 1950 which until recently was sufficient for marking it with {{PD-Russia}} template. Since January 1, 2008 {{PD-Russia}} is deprecated, but there is consensus that PD-Russia images should NOT be automatically deleted, but discussed individually. In time of upload the image was perfectly PD, and possible deletion is not an imperative but a question to discuss. Please undelete Image:Elektrozavodskaya1950s.jpg, and if you consider it necessary renominate it at Commons:Deletion requests. -M5 (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
