My favorites as a juror for Wiki Loves Monuments USA 2012, with some comments
-
I like the juxtaposition of the well-lit ruin with the dark clouds behind
-
OK, I'm a homer
-
Nice photo of somewhere I've actually been
-
An early favorite as I was reviewing these. Very dignified and historic ... something you'd expect the NPS to use on their site
-
How to photograph a lighthouse
-
Looks like the cover of a sci-fi paperback from the 1970s.
-
Isn't this shown during the opening credits of the new Hawaii Five-0? If not it should be.
-
The closest of these to my house ... I can actually see this from some high ground near where I live.
-
If we broke these down by state this would be the hands-down winner for Alaska. I looked at it and said "Where else could it be"?
-
Been there more than once too. Nice overview that shows better than any other photo we have how the town is situated.
-
Normally I don't like this front-on angle, but for this building it actually works
-
Of the many images of old farms or farmhouses, I like this one best. The fence just makes it.
-
Nice postcard image
-
Excellent illustration of the Late Victorian Gothic style
-
What is it with lighthouses and this contest?
-
Been to this one too ... nice complement to my picture
-
I like the way it captures the surrounding Plains
-
Moutainside where you normally see sky ... different and effective
-
An obvious shot, and as such easy to screw up. But not here
-
I suppose, given all the county courthouses on the Register, one would have had to end up here
-
Good landscape in an area that must be filled with possibilities
-
Not a view you think of every day
-
Louvre-like juxtaposition of modern and 18th-century forms
-
An improvement from my picture taken four years ago
-
OK, California, what's your take on this lighthouse concept?
-
A picture of a frequently-photographed building that nevertheless makes me think I'm seeing it for the first time
-
Mmmm ... wasn't expecting this.
-
If I have to pick any neon lighting from these I pick this for its simplicity
-
Massachusetts' entry in the lighthouse derby. The gulls just add that certain je ne sais quoi to the image.
-
I haven't picked many interiors, but this is different and encyclopedic
-
Usually you have to choose between being arty and being encyclopedic. This one gets to have it both ways
-
Exactly what you'd expect the Vermont state capitol to look like
-
This one's just waiting to be used in a campaign ad
-
I like the way this one draws you to its prime subject
-
OK, more typical of how Massachusetts does lighthouses. Gets right to the point
-
Light raking at just the right angle for this composition (Would like to have it in a more accessible format, though)
