Purpose

[edit]

Is there any purpose for this? I saw it is used in {{Gregorian serial date}} to place comments. But comments are stripped anyways, so that cannot be the reason. --Slomox (talk) 02:40, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's for when you want to return an empty string among other things (usually subst'd or conditionally subst'd). There's other methods with parser functions to do them same, but sometimes this method is preferred. Rocket000 (talk) 08:46, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And what's the difference to returning a literal empty string? --Slomox (talk) 10:17, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, maybe an example of one of its uses might help. Simple use: {{ImageWithNotes}}. Yes, there's alternatives, but this one is the most user-friendly. See meta:Template:For for another interesting use (lots of neat template stuff over there if you're ever looking to expand your template-buildings skills).
