Grey v.s gray

[edit]

This was triggered by what’s being discussed here — but this is what should be done:

  1. decide wheather Wikimedia Commons’ categories should use the spelling "grey" or "gray"
  2. then rename all “wrong” category names and create persistent template redirects to allow for unaware, but still legitimate, use
  3. correct non-category links to category names, such as those inside this very template (as was done this once, maybe prematurely)
  4. (optional step) rename files called by templates like this one (images such as these)
  5. (conditional step ⇐ step above) change the inner workings of templates such as this one to match.

(Wieralee is doing step 5 before step 4 is even approved.) I raised step 1 in the village pump; this doesn’t abode well, though. -- Tuválkin 15:00, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just rename all tram categories to "grey", that's all. At least within a certain topic everything should be uniform. YLSS (talk) 15:24, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A conflict of editions. @Tuvalkin: : I had stopped this work in the middle, because of my discussion with Mattbuck, see 1 2. Mattbuck has obligated himself to revert my changes, so I'd left it. I started this work because you started to move the "grey" category and nobody had finished it --- and nobody had reverted it. This category wasn't empty - so I still had it on the list to fix see 3. Sorry for the confusion. I hope that finally this problem would be solved. It doesn't matter which way it would be done, but it would be great tohave this problem fixed. moved from User talk:Tuvalkin#Files in Category:Grey and red rolling stock‎

This category does not exist => it's only a redirection there (I don't know, who's work was it)... When you put files in redirected category, nobody can see them. Move those files anywhere else. Wieralee (talk) 18:40, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wieralee, as asked before, please do not mess with the inner workings of a complex transcluded and scripted template. If you have suggestions about it, please contribute to Template_talk:TramColors. -- Tuválkin 14:37, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you revert or move category, check it. You can't make redirections which are not empty, because it causes other problems. Look here 1 2. Your editions "undo" causes that those categories are on the list of categories with problems (the categories should be empty, but they are not). I only want to fix those categories. Your editions made this problem, so I ask you to solve it. Wieralee (talk) 19:15, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do the category renamings you want between "grey" and "gray", I don’t mind — waiting for some form of consensus would be good, but knock yourself out. However, if you feed the template {{TramColors}} with anything other than the expected 13 color names (among which "grey", not "gray", is — for now — included), you're causing missing filename calls on the category namespace for a dozen categories: That constitutes vandalism, as you were already warned repeatedly. -- Tuválkin 20:04, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
