langswitches

[edit]
Hi! I want to put in langswitches at Template:States of the United States so the names of the states will display differently if the user's language preference is set to Spanish (i.e. Spanish names of states display instead of English names) - How do I do this? Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 20:35, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

copied from my user talk --anro (talk) 20:11, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest making a multilingual tag for each state. These would be useful elsewhere. That's kinda a lot of work so you could make something like Template:CountryName/en instead. Rocket000 (talk) 00:29, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This can be done using Module:Countries which takes input from Wikidata and is a bit smarter using a data module. verdy_p (talk) 21:52, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Convert to definition list with hlist class

[edit]

I have created a sandbox page to show how the hlist class may be used but this needs some testcases. Could anyone add a good set ie with/without prefixes, suffixes, and missing states? Allen4names (talk) 10:31, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done using HTML markup. Sandbox now synced as well. Allen4names (talk) 20:04, 8 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Washington

[edit]

Check out Category:Scouting in Washington, where I'm using {{US states}}. Washington state doesn't show in the template. What's up with that? Evrik (talk) 19:14, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I previewed it with the sandbox version (see sect. above) and see the same problem. Anyone know what is causing it? Allen4names (talk) 04:56, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The category should be located at Category:Scouting in Washington (state) for the template to work. kennethaw88talk 03:25, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed it. Evrik (talk) 15:30, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

New York --> New York (state)

[edit]

Per Commons:Categories for discussion/2017/03/Category:New York, categories pertaining to New York state are being moved from "... New York ..." to "... New York (state) ...". The old category becomes a redirect and still gets listed by this template. For instance, clicking New York in Category:Law of the United States by state shows the redirect, not the new category. Can the template be modified to list a New York category including "(state)", if it exists, otherwise list the corresponding category without it? Waz8 (talk) 17:44, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When I have finished moving the categories, I will adjust this template. If there is a solution involving auto-detection somehow I'm all for it.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:11, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Should be working now. kennethaw88talk 09:33, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, it works exactly as I had requested -- thanks! Waz8 (talk) 03:30, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mississippi (state)?

[edit]

Why is this template distinguishing Mississippi as a state? From what is being distinguished? An Errant Knight (talk) 17:13, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See Category:Mississippi : there are disambiguation there. verdy_p (talk) 21:54, 31 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

District of Columbia Heading

[edit]

Can the template be adjusted so that the District of Columbia heading is on a new line, like in this version? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎ Kennethaw88 (talk • contribs) 19:41, October 8, 2019 (UTC)

text displayed in error

[edit]

@Dragonlord73: The word </noinclude> is being displayed on transclusions of this template. See Category:Corporate headquarters in New Hampshire for example. Senator2029 13:14, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mississippi (state) categories no longer appear

[edit]

The last edit removed the handling of categories which use Mississippi (state) instead of just Mississippi in the name. This created two issues:

  1. when only a category using Mississippi (state) exists, Mississippi does not appear in the navbox created by the template (e.g. Category:Geography of Mississippi (state)).
  2. when both categories exist, Mississippi appears but links to the category using just Mississippi, which was typically created when the category was moved (e.g. Category:Categories of Mississippi (state)).

Since new categories are being created with the (state) suffix and existing ones possibly renamed to have it appended, I believe this case needs to be supported. I had intended to make the handling of Mississippi (state) categories follow that of New York (state) ones but, apparently, some "weird text" was introduced. Perhaps this occurs only when "all" is specified? If anyone can provide a category which illustrates the error, I will attempt to fix it while preserving support for the newly disambiguated category. Thanks! Waz8 (talk) 02:08, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is fixed by using a smarter module that knows about aliases, and know translations to display in the box, and can sort them according to the user's language. verdy_p (talk) 20:21, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Even better -- thank you! Waz8 (talk) 03:23, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

“Lua error in Module:Countries at line 252”

[edit]

This template is not working in Category:Congressional district maps of Texas and Category:Congressional district maps of Florida, but works in Category:Congressional district maps of California and Category:Congressional district maps of Illinois. I can't figure it out. — Jerome Potts (talk) 19:18, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
