{{Edit request}} Please add <noinclude>{{heavily used template}}</noinclude> to the top of this high use template (example). Riley Huntley (talk) 08:41, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

When the link starts with a colon, as in {{Birds of NYC photo contest 2022/layout}}, a newline is inserted, which breaks the link. I have seen other templates on en.WP do this when a parameter starts with wikimarkup like * or : or #. Is there a way to work around this rendering problem? This is also happening at {{Brněnské focení/layout}}. Jonesey95 (talk) 18:26, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please copy the Template:Smartlink/sandbox code into the live template. I copied {{Encodefirst}} from en.WP and employed it here to fix this problem. That template converts :, *, and other similar indenting/markup characters to their literal equivalents so that linking still works but newlines are not created. There is an example at Template:Smartlink/testcases. Jonesey95 (talk) 14:48, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
