Copyvio

[edit]

So should we change this to {{Copyvio}} directly? pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:33, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why I didn't make the redirect was that people directly see the reason why a screenshot is not allowed at commons. But on the other hand zillions of deletion templates also don't help making our message clear... Arnomane 00:02, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Forgive my ignorance, but - why aren't screenshots allowed on Commons? Are they allowed in other Wiki projects? Tamuz 11:45, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Screenshots are derivative works and are only allowed if the original product was released under a free license/public domain. If your wiki allows fair use items, they may be allowed. It depends on the local rules. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:49, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Thanks for the explanation. Well, a few minutes ago I've uploaded a screenshot of the game Planescape: Torment. It can be found here, so you'll probably want to delete it now. I'll upload it to the relevant Wikipedias instead. Thanks again, Tamuz 11:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I think you should notify on the Upload page that fair-use files aren't allowed here. Many users, myself included, are used to Wikipedias that do allow the upload of such images, so it should be made clear to them that these are not allowed here. Tamuz 11:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good, thanks for being honest. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:01, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

What about if I ask for permission from one of game companies (ie. Blizzard Entertainment) and got a permission to use for non-commercial use ? Lothar25 00:11, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We don't allow any media with non-commercial only conditions. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:42, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thanks for info Lothar25 00:45, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Please change:

}}
<includeonly>{{{category|[[Category:Copyright violations|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}]]}}}</includeonly>

to

|category=<includeonly>[[Category:Copyright violations|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}]]</includeonly>}}

since {{Speedy delete text}} already has a {category} parameter.Jonteemil (talk) 16:19, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done --Green Giant (talk) 21:02, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonteemil and Green Giant: This is not how this parameter works. The |category= parameter in Commons templates is for disabling the categorization. This works by passing the parameter empty, but passing the parameter further the usual way actually ensures that the parameter will always be present, which disables {{Speedy delete text}}’s categorization at all times. I made a tricky processing that overcomes this issue, although it’s unfortunately not obvious to see at a glance how it works, as it modifies the parameter name in {{Speedy delete text}}’s call based on the parameter value passed to this template. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:33, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tacsipacsi: What was the problem with my solution? Now, again, all files are categorized in both Category:Other speedy deletions and Category:Copyright violations where it should only be in the latter.Jonteemil (talk) 07:32, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonteemil: It looks like from your request that you completely misunderstand what this parameter is for. |category= generally should not contain anything but whitespace, as it’s usually not guaranteed that this parameter will have affect on a given page at all (for example it’s often used only in certain namespaces). So specifying the parameter as empty is OK if it has a good reason—your request had only “since {{Speedy delete text}} already has a {category} parameter”, which is not a good reason for this change, but redundant categorization is. Done.Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:33, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tacsipacsi: I still don't quite get it. Will these two versions ever work differently?Jonteemil (talk) 09:11, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonteemil: Yes, they can work differently in multiple ways:
  • If one wants to disable all categorization by this template (which is not desired on file pages, but may be needed on help pages and guidelines), it can be done by specifying an empty |category=—but only in my version, as your version doesn’t process this parameter.
  • If {{Speedy delete text}} is ever changed to disable categorization altogether based on some criteria, this template’s categorization will suddenly disappear on those pages, even though those criteria are not present here.
(Maybe there are some other ways as well that I can’t think of right now.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 02:21, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template error

{{Edit request}}

When copying the following text to a user's talk page:

{{subst:speedynote|1=Template:Screenshot|2=This image is a screenshot of a non-free program or other copyrighted material. Although the image may be usable in certain circumstances under the doctrine of [[:en:Fair use|fair use]], fair use claims are never allowed on Commons: see [[COM:FU]]. This file may be deleted without further notice.<br />'''Note: If the screenshot shows a program or other material that is itself under a free license like GPL, please indicate this with the [[:Template:Free screenshot|<span style="font-family:monospace,monospace;">{{Free screenshot}}</span>]] tag.'''}} ~~~~

The {{Free screenshot}} text renders the actual template and not just the text (for example, see this edit). Recommend adding <nowiki>{{Free screenshot}}</nowiki> around this text. Pbrks (talk) 22:52, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

<nowiki></nowiki> tags won't work, unfortunately, because that'll just nowiki out the tl template everywhere. This has been causing problems for a while though, so I replaced it with just a link to Template:Free screenshot. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 21:28, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
