Why is this dated 1905 instead of 1912?

[edit]

@Andy Dingley: Why does this template use a date of 1905, the year the book was first published, instead of 1912, the year of this edition? I came across this template from its use for an image of the Green D.4 engine taken from this book. Because of the template, the image shows a date of 1905, but the Green D.4 engine wasn't developed until 1909. I assume there are other engines in this book which similarly postdate the 1905 publication, so a 1912 date seems more appropriate. --Colin Douglas Howell (talk) 08:14, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Change it if you wish (most have been deleted anyway) - these multi-volume books were largely published in a set of volumes on the original date and then the later editions were formed by adding new volumes, usually without changing the original volumes. I could have a look in more detail at this (I have most of the sets), but I'm not going to waste time doing large scans for Commons any more. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:54, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK. For what it's worth, this particular image came from Volume III of the 1912 edition. --Colin Douglas Howell (talk) 23:09, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
