Google Maps really?

[edit]

Is there a reason why Google Maps which is run by an advertisement company is linked here? Is it because of that grant? 87.78.29.43 17:20, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is not much alternative to Google Maps if you want to see satellite images. For example check OSM and GM links from this image. GM is also nice since they allow ploting data like polygons on top of their maps. See parameter poly in {{GeoPolygon}} or {{Institution}}. So until there is some open source alternative we are stuck with Google Maps and Google Earth (for KML file support). --Jarekt (talk) 19:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

…with extreme prejudice.
  1. Horizontal real estate is too precious for Google Maps spam.
  2. The GeoHack link already offers Google Maps among others.
  3. The direct OSM-link is "nice" enough for everybody.
  4. The KML-argument—see above—is not more applicable.

  •  Oppose the removal of the Google Maps icon linking to a satelite image of the location, but I might be biased since I placed it there in the first place.
  1. The icon is 16 pixels wide so I do not think it will save you much horizontal space.
  2. The GeoHack is only showing in the "Institution" namespace (on insistence of people who run the database side of GeoHack) so if you are in the file namespace and want to look up location of the institution than OSM and GoogleMap links are your only choises.
  3. I love OSM but it does not provide satelite images - my preferred way of viewing the map
I was quite confused about the section title, I doubt you are getting spam from Google Maps because of this link and if you are afraid of spam on the Google site than you can always decide not to use it. But as I said I might be biased, since I do like to use it. So it would be useful to hear from others on this subject. --Jarekt (talk) 01:51, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Precious width is precious width, cf. phabricator:T91890 for an unrelated recent case. 16px is 2% of 800 (SVGA), the width has to be radically trimmed to an absolute minimum. Vague idea, the wikipedia:MOS:COORDS says that one second is less than 31m, and almost every "institution" should be bigger. Therefore you could get rid of decimal fractions of seconds with something in the direction of {{location|prec=100}} and/or a smaller/nicer font.
For comparison (prec=100 emulation)
input result
48° 51′ 37.42″ N, 2° 20′ 15.36″ E 48° 51′ 37.42″ N, 2° 20′ 15.36″ E

<samp style="font-size:smaller">48°51′37″N 2°20′15″E</samp> 48°51′37″N 2°20′15″E
It't not my idea, but I forgot where I found this style, enwiki or dewiki, and adopted it for my user pages on c:, d:, de:, en:, m:, and mw:. –Be..anyone (talk) 06:33, 9 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Be..anyone sorry I overlooked your last proposal of dropping the fractions of the seconds. That is a good idea and ✓ Done. I used 50m precision. --Jarekt (talk) 13:21, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia maps

[edit]

I think that Wikimedia maps, although still in beta, is ready to be linked from here. --abián 23:48, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have never heard about Wikimedia maps. Is there a place to read about them? They seem similar to OSM. --Jarekt (talk) 04:35, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can read about them on mw:Maps. --abián 11:11, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
