very parameter: suggested small change of wording

[edit]

The sentence "This template is used on a great lot of pages" could be improved by changing it to "This template is used on a huge number of pages" – or even "... on many pages". Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 04:26, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support The wording is surprisingly informal indeed. The reason is it was added without review (nor even discussion) by a non-native speaker. Following Sarang's change, there are now 2 possible wordings―"on a lot of pages" (by default) or "on a great lot of pages"―which I believe is a good thing. I would agree that the "very" version should be better phrased though. Perhaps it shouldn't talk so much about the number of pages, but just say something like "This template is extremely used […]", since the importance of pages matters just as much.--Chealer (talk) 12:03, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"A lot of" is very informal. "Many" is better.
"Extremely" is not a good adverb to qualify "used". "Heavily used" is a better alternative but I'm not in favour of it.
I recommend "on a large number of pages", implying that it's more than just "many". Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 03:26, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's pretty long when we could just say "on numerous pages". I agree that "extremely" is ambiguous. One things that could be done and which would minimize translation costs and complexity would be to just compute the number of using templates ("This template is used on roughly 999 pages."). OK. Since "numerous" ⟷ "many", I revert to my earlier suggestion: "This template is used on many pages." Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 🇦🇺 💬 at 13:17, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
