[edit]In respect of creating categories, this template states: "Use the common name, not the english one". What is intended by this piece of advice? Where does it originate?
I note that COM:CAT states "Category names should always be in English (except life forms, for which the scientific Latin name should be used)". In Wikipedia, the "use English" guideline doesn't necessarily mean one always uses English -- it simply means that you use the name most recognized by English-speakers (e.g. "Place de la Concorde", not "Concord Place"). It could be that the wording of this template is intended to capture that approach (and not conflict with COM:CAT). However, it could also be read as going one step further, that the local common name always trumps the English-language version of the name.
As someone who edits a number of Canada-related categories, this is an important issue (as we are often faced with the dilemna of using English or French language names for categories). I don't want to be a bull in a china shop and edit this template, so I wouldn't mind understanding how this all fits in with COM:CAT. Thanks. --skeezix1000 (talk) 17:26, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
