Non-standard template

@RIsler (WMF): this template has some technical problems. All not too hard to fix. Something that does need more attention is the concept of the template. Templates are are used to indicate that something is covered by some license or policy. See for example {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. For the whole concept of a 3D patent a policy page should be created (and fully protected) and this template should link to that page. That policy page can be made here on Commons or somewhere on a more central place like meta or the foundation wiki. Can you take care of this? Multichill (talk) 15:31, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

@Multichill: Agreed that this is a weird way to do this, but it was a long battle to reach this compromise solution as part of several challenging legal issues we had to address. The template does actually link to a WMF license if the user has designated the file as their own work (https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_3D_file_patent_license), but the default state just has a warranty, and there is no official page for that, as that's a different legal concept and we were trying to keep this from getting too complicated. We were trying to use one adaptable template to cover both scenarios. Open to suggestions for how we might do this better. RIsler (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Just to add some more context for how we got here; we do actually have an overall page on Wikilegal for 3D file issues (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikilegal/3D_files_and_3D_printing), but it doesn't really represent an official policy, just some background and guidance on the general discussion about 3D file issues. We could certainly link to this in the "not my own work" form of this template, or even both forms, but there were some concerns that this was too much and could raise more questions than it answered, so we went with the simpler solution of a very straightforward phrase, sans legalese and easy to translate, that essentially serves as the most basic waiver possible. Translate extension

Hi,

I switched this template to use the modern internationalisation framework, relying on the Translate extension :)

Also, per {{Style formatting template list}}, I was wondering whether we should switch the Layout-Style to {{Restriction-Layout}} or {{Other License-Layout}}. Thoughts?
