Template:PaintingfromCZcat

Not an alias of Template:PaintingfromCzechRepubliccat nor Template:PaintingfromCzechiacat. Choosing and transcluding one of them is prefered practice. Template:PaintingfromCZcat should rarely be transcluded.

PaintingfromCZcat does extensive tests of page existence in the wiki, to maybe connect different eras on a timeline which used different names to refer to a similar or same subject over a period of time. If a name is stable for a set of categories per decade, it is almost certain that one of the two other templates should be used.

PaintingfromCZcat should be employed when a set of categories dedicated to the same topic uses different country names for historic reasons. If country names deviate at random, because uploaders did not care to rectify and use a common denominator, or if the naming dispute is local to Commons and has no grounds in publications elsewhere, this template should not be used as a drop-in-solution for convenience. If there is no historic evidence that supports having alternating country names in a set, then titles of such a set of categories should be fixed and a dedicated country name should be used as appropiate.

Note that there is a bias in redlinks. If a category title does not exist in the wiki yet, the term Czechia is used to link to. It is beyond the scope of a navbar to suggest both titles, but this bias is not set in stone either. The bias can be changed by exchanging values of the template parameters 3a and 3, when editing this page. If both variants exist, the Czech Republic will be prefered, unless it is a redirect (real redirects and cat redirects are searched and resolved to their target if possible).

Usage

This template provides a small navigational box with painting categories (by year). A given start year leads to earlier and later categories. It can be used both in image files and in categories. Syntax:

The second form auto-deducts MCD and Y from a transcluding PAGENAME. For this to work, the title of the transcluding page needs to start with a pattern 'MCDY paintings '.
