Template:Independent cities in the United States
This template is intended as a navigational aid in categories of the independent cities of the United States (cities that are not in the jurisdiction of any county, or parish in Louisiana, or borough in Alaska).
While similar, an independent city differs from a consolidated city-county in that the city and county both nominally exist in the case of a consolidated city-county (although they have a consolidated government), whereas in an independent city, the county (or parish or borough) does not even nominally exist.
Note that all cities or towns in insular territories are also independent, because insular territories are still not subdivided into counties. (There is an ongoing proposal to create counties in Puerto Rico to group their municipalities, but it is still not effective).
Also note, while there are independent cities outside the United States, consolidated city-county is term exclusive to the United States.
Usage
{{Independent cities in the United States |prefix= |suffix= }}
Template parameters
Parameter | Description | Default | Status | |
---|---|---|---|---|
prefix | prefix | Optional namespace (prefixed by ":" for special namespaces) and beginning of the target pagename to link to, before the name of the state capital, such as ":Category:". | empty | optional |
suffix | suffix | Optional end of the target pagename to link to, after the name of the state capital. | empty | optional |
sep | separator | If this parameter is explicitly set, allows to replace or remove the default space separator before and after the English city name in the target link; useful if there are subpagenames or other punctuation ending the prefix or starting the suffix. To keep the default spaces, don't pass the parameter, or pass the empty value "<nowiki/>" or " " to pass the space explicitly. If you set this parameter to an empty string, you'll need to supply the appropriate separators in the prefix or suffix parameters. | (SPACE ) | optional |
all | option | If this parameter is non-empty, allows to include all possible links, even if the target pages still don't exist. For debugging only and temporary use (don't use on pages for specific capitale cities), useful temporarily in a parent category for creating new pages for missing cities or for checking missing/broken redirects, or pages using incoherent names with unknown aliases. | empty | optional |

List of supported independant cities
New York City is included because it is not in the juridiction of any county of the New York State, but is still special because it is subdividided in municipal boroughs that are considered county-like for census purpose. Washington D.C. is also is a single municipality, not part of any county so it is also considered county-like, but it also has a special status (integrated in the Union, but not part of any state and considered state-like).
