@Hike395: I saw that you changed Category:Gallery pages about nature of California to Category:Gallery pages of California. But is this gallery page not about nature? I only see photos that I would label as "nature". Can your change be reverted? JopkeB (talk) 02:58, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My reasoning was that the gallery is about the village of June Lake, California with 600 people (not just about the lake named "June Lake" which is in front of the town). I think that the categorization should be about the topic, rather than the contents, because the topic won't change, but people may add a number of photographs of the town in the future. Similar reasoning applies to Mammoth Lakes, California (a town of about 7,000 people) and Swall Meadows, California (a small village of 200 people). There already are image(s) of the town(s) in June Lake, California and Mammoth Lakes, California.
I can see your reasoning: Alcatraz Island, despite being an island, is a prison, and most of the photographs are about the inside of the prison. So putting Alcatraz Island into Category:Gallery pages about nature of California seems wrong. OTOH, Alcatraz Island will likely be a prison (museum) for the forseeable future.
To try to make it clearer, I reorganized Mammoth Lakes, California into two sections: one for the town, one for the surrounding area. I'm not sure whether we need consistency between the three galleries --- perhaps there will never be a Commons photograph of the town of Swall Meadows, California (since it was heavily damaged in the Round Fire back in 2015. What do you think?
Later --- I did find a photograph of an abandoned cabin in Swall Meadows, and a map of the village. Added them both to the gallery. — hike395 (talk) 03:41, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the cabin was in Round Valley, California, not Swall Meadows. It's a different town nearby. Removed. — hike395 (talk) 03:54, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I understand. But perhaps the names of the galleries should then be adjusted, something like "Nature of XXX" or "Countryside around XXX", when the current name does not reflect the content. JopkeB (talk) 09:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like that idea: I converted Swall Meadows, California to Nature of Swall Meadows, removed the map, then put it back in Category:Gallery pages about nature of California. For Mammoth Lakes, California, there seem to be enough photographs of non-nature to justify a broad gallery (analogous to any other city gallery in California, e.g., Sacramento).
June Lake, California is a bit more problematic: there is only one photograph of the town, 2 of the ski area, and 11 of the natural area surrounding the town. It's 80% about nature, but not 100%. I would like to still keep the photographs of the town and ski area, because that does illustrate the topic. But 3 photographs are not really enough to support a separate gallery (if we split them). I would propose keeping June Lake, California as a single town-based gallery in Category:Gallery pages of California. What do you think of that? — hike395 (talk) 11:25, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. JopkeB (talk) 15:45, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
