[edit]

I've deleted some overlapping pictures. I've added maps, old maps, route maps, and pics of museums, theatres, tourist attractions, traffic, harbours, airports, old Helsinki, and sights near Helsinki. It may look like a tourist guide, but I really hope that the general quality of the page and the pics is now better. I also hope that the page helps people to find attractions and places in Helsinki, the page shows what it is to live in Helsinki, and what other attractions and places can easily be reached near or via Helsinki. I try to translate the english texts under the images to Finnish. If anyone is interested to use better translation skills to Swedish, I'd appreciate. Pöllö (talk) 14:00, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Naming the article

[edit]

Helsinki / Helsingfors is officially a bilingual city therefore we use both official names here. If you want any changes in this article's title, please discuss them here before you change, otherwise you'll simply be reverted. Aaker (talk) 01:22, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

According to Commons:Galleries#Naming conventions "galleries should be named in language most associated with the subject.", so only one language should be used and in this case it is Finnish. Furthermore, even if we would include both the Finnish and Swedish language forms it should be "Helsinki – Helsingfors" with an endash. --Apalsola tc 07:45, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So YOU are reverting it again and then request that others FIRST have to discuss before they correct it again according to our rules. You should have noticed by now that I'm not the only one who reverts your changes. You were now told serveral times by different people who the rules are but still prefer to follow your own ones. -- Cecil (talk) 14:05, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is no rule in commons that forbids the name "Helsinki - Helsingfors" or any other local language name. Please, let us be a bit tolerant and leave a little room for the local languages. People should feel at least a bit a home on Commons. --Foroa (talk) 09:57, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Who would type that kind of name if he wants to find a gallery? We have a redirect system, so if you type "Helsingfors" you would still land here. In Finland there is a system that the language which has the majority of speakers is the one that is the "dominating" one. That's why e.g. the name of the gallery of the Finnish city Tammisaari is in Swedish (not in Finish). That actually works in all Wikipedia-projects where the cities don't have own local names. The Commons:Galleries#Naming conventions says that galleries should be named in language most associated with the subject. In case of Helsinki that is the Finish word. If we would start to name galleries in all the languages possible that would be unreadable. Even if we only take those languages officially acknowledged by the concerned countries it would be unreadable. In case of Switzerland there are four official languages and two more that are officially acknowledged. Where exactly do you want to draw the boarder? Will you be the moderator for each language fight here on Commons that will follow because people of one more language feel that their language should also be in the gallery name because everything else would be discrimination of their language? -- Cecil (talk) 16:23, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As a Belgian (with 3 official languages and one informal English one) I have been involved in many language fights (South Tirol, Spain/Catalan/Basque, Silesia and many border areas). There are even several dual language categories because there are several official languages and no official English word. Stating that the majority decides is a source of problems. In most cases and certainly in this Finish case, especially for galleries, I assume that the local Finish contributors (for which I have a high esteem) are wise enough to decide upon any name that looks acceptable for them and will create all needed redirects to reach them (they are accessible anyway through the category system). If it is "their own" name, then you can bet that they will take care of that. You have to trust them and let them "grow" their own corner. What will you do with names that include russian, chinese, greek, arabic, hebrew, ... parts in the name ? Rename them in English ? --Foroa (talk) 18:21, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
