There is no species with the name Arctocephalus elegans. The only reference to this species are the captions of the image on various sites. Petwoe 19:50, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

As User:B.navez has confirmed, there is only one species, arctocephalus gazella, depicted. - Peter_Aut 08:37, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arctocephalus gazella vs A. tropicalis

[edit]

I confirm there is today only one species of fur seal on Amsterdam island, but this species has been now identified as Arctocephalus tropicalis (Sub-antarctic fur seal) and not A. gazella (Antarctic or Kerguelen's fur seal). A. tropicalis live on Gough, Amsterdam & St Paul islands as the only one species. Both species (gazella and tropicalis) may be found on Marion, Crozet and Macquarie islands. A lost fur seal has been found on Mauritius shore last week! The drawing is historically very interesting because the name of the species (gazella) could come from the name of the ship of the scientific expedition (S.M.S. Gazelle - 1874) but it was finally not the right one ! Scientifically, the drawing is very confusing. B.navez 20:38, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
