Metlakatla, Alaska

[edit]

Melakatla, Alaska was founded in 1887 by missionary William Duncan and his congregation of Tsimshian Indians, who relocated from Metlakahtla, BC due to disputes involving religious freedom and land rights. The village, on Village Point, Port Chester Bay, Annette Island, Alaska, was originally known as New Metlakahtla. The "New" was subsequently dropped and the Post Office changed the spelling to "Metlakatla" in 1904.
