{{Editprotected}} This controls what file (exif/XMP/IPTC) metadata fields are shown by default. There are some things missing from this list. I think probably because they didn't exist at the time this was last edited (You can compare the current list with the default for mediawiki at MediaWiki:Metadata-fields/en). If you want to see the meaning of what any of these tags are, go to the page MediaWiki:exif-TAGNAMEHERE or the qqq page on translate wiki. e.g. for webstatement see mediawiki:exif-webstatement or https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Exif-webstatement/qqq . Anyways I would like to propose adding the following as useful tags to display by default:

  • gpslatitude
  • gpslongitude
  • dc-rights
  • copyrightowner
  • usageterms
  • webstatement
  • licenseurl
  • attributionurl
  • preferredattributionname
  • credit
  • jpegfilecomment
  • pngfilecomment
  • giffilecomment

There are also some other more obscure ones. Most of these are basically never used or of questionable value but arguably are human readable if set. I'm listing them here in case people think it would be a good idea to add them, however I am personally neutral on adding them.

  • datetime
  • datetimedigitized
  • datetimereleased
  • gpstimestamp
  • gpsaltitude
  • iimcategory
  • subjectnewscode
  • keywords
  • usercomment
  • worldregiondest
  • countrydest
  • countrycodedest
  • provinceorstatedest
  • citydest
  • sublocationdest
  • worldregioncreated
  • countrycreated
  • countrycodecreated
  • provinceorstatecreated
  • citycreated
  • sublocationcreated
  • objectname
  • specialinstructions
  • headline
  • source
  • locationdest
  • locationdestcode
  • writer
  • iimsupplementalcategory
  • identifier
  • dc-contributor
  • dc-coverage
  • dc-publisher
  • dc-relation
  • dc-source
  • dc-type
  • lens
  • cameraownername
  • label
  • nickname
  • rightscertificate
  • morepermissionsurl
  • disclamer
  • contentwarning
  • scenecode
  • intellectualgenre
  • event
  • organisationinimage
  • personinimage
  • capturesoftware
  • stitchingsoftware
  • copyrighted
  • rating
  • languagecode

Thanks. Bawolff (talk) 17:21, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bawolff: I’m not sure about this. According to the page history, the local version of this message was originally created to show two more important fields by default, but at the moment all the fields in the local message are also included in the MediaWiki core default version (and then some more are missing locally) – so I’d actually think we could just delete this page (and hopefully nobody will care about the different order of the fields in core). But some of the fields you’re proposing for addition (even in the first section) are again missing from the core version, so in that case the local version would be necessary again – but is there a reason not to add those fields to the core version too? @Lucas Werkmeister: That's a good point. Maybe I should pursue a patch instead. I would suggest at the very least that the local interface page here should be deleted. Bawolff (talk) 22:26, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Though I had another idea this morning: would it make sense to first apply the change here on Commons, and see if anyone complains, before merging it in core? (And then still delete the local page at the end.) 🤔 Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:35, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, Umherirrender just merged the Gerrit change (thanks!), and I updated the local copy of the message accordingly. We can leave it for a few days now, and assuming nobody complains (I’ll try to keep an eye on the village pumps), we can then propose this page for deletion once the MediaWiki change has been deployed with the train, so after Thursday or so. (I’m not a regular admin, so I won’t be able to do the deletion myself.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:32, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Deletion requested on AN (permalink). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:54, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lucas Werkmeister: Deleted now. Raymond 20:04, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Raymond: Thanks! I think I actually filed that request too soon – it’s Thursday evening, but apparently the train is blocked and so Commons is still on 1.40.0-wmf.21 (according to toolforge:versions) which has the older message 😅 but I think we can just leave it like that and wait for the train to roll forward (hopefully tomorrow). The message seems to take effect when a file is parsed (rather than shown), as far as I can tell, so it would be inconsistent across pages anyways, depending on when they were last added to the parser cache. So I don’t think the page needs to be undeleted :) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:12, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lucas Werkmeister I think it is OK to keep it deleted for this short time. Raymond 21:36, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
