It's all about freedom

All users of files found on Wikimedia Commons must be given the Four Freedoms:

  1. The freedom to use and perform the work.
  2. The freedom to study the work and apply the information.
  3. The freedom to redistribute copies.
  4. The freedom to create and distribute derivative works.

Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. In addition, claims of fair use are explicitly NOT and will NEVER be permitted on Commons. Please only upload files that either:

  • are in the public domain in the source country (author died more than 70 years ago) and in the U.S., or that
  • are explicitly covered by a license which grants the Four Freedoms.

See the list of acceptable licenses. Also, please only upload useful files; Wikimedia Commons is for educational or informational content.

For works which are your own, please use the form for uploading own works.

Overwriting an existing file

Please note: For new users, there is a 4 day period when they can't overwrite existing files uploaded by other users.

You want to re-upload a file over an already existing file. Please note that this should only be done if the new file is essentially the same as the already existing file.

File changes: Describe the changes you made to the file you will overwrite. This will appear as the edit summary in the file history. A description is mandatory.

For instance, if you've cropped away a border, say so. Or if you're uploading a larger, but otherwise identical, version of the already existing file, write "Larger version from ", followed by the source of the new version.

Your description will appear as an edit summary; it will not appear on the file description page itself! If the new version comes from a different source, or has a different author or license, please also update the file description page after the upload.

If the new version you want to upload differs substantially from the already existing file, it is almost always better to upload the file under a new name instead of overwriting the existing file.
