History

[edit]

One of the first GLAM projects of the Hungarian Wikipedia is the GLAM ZOO, which was started at the beginning of May 2014 at the Miskolc Zoo. The project has been created in cooperation with Wikipedia's Wikiproject Miskolc and the Miskolc Zoo. Its importance lies in the fact that this is the first Wikimedia project using QR codes, and Miskolc Zoo is the first zoo in Hungary to apply these codes. The project used the technical background offered by QRpedia in order to provide new information to visitors.

The work was started on September 11, 2013 and finished on May 1, 2014. It was an important object to assemble a reliable team of editors who participated in the work from the beginning until the end of the project, to cooperate with the teammates and the project leader, to meet the deadlines, to maintain quality, and to create and provide trustworthy background materials.

The articles will appear on mobile phones, so their composition, the position of pictures on the pages, the appearance of the sheets and templates each were a determining factor. The articles needed to be equipped with Wikidata information, in order for the article to be found in every language it is available in. The pre-existing articles had to be corrected and reshaped, according to a unified system, where all the articles had to contain some predefined pieces of information, like the geographical presence of the animal, its etymology, description of its habitat and habit, its figure, lifespan, specification of species and subspecies, together with their Latin denomination. The Wikipedia articles were checked by the staff of the zoo during Spring 2014 and in April 2014 the codes were placed next to the animal information plaques. Altogether, 132 articles were taken under the project’s wings. The editors of Wikipedia participated in this work collectively.

As a close of the work done, the project was delivered on 1 May 2014 in the Miskolc Zoo.

The project was supported by Wikimédia Magyarország Egyesület (Wikimedia Hungary).
