Updates

The map needs to be updated to cover Tajoura https://twitter.com/#!/arabspringonion/status/105063126952710144 --Richhaddon (talk) 23:49, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Someone needs to update this map constantly so we know where the front line is. 69.235.80.27 02:26, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
This is the OLD February map - we need to make a new version of it for the August uprisings. Unfortunately, my computer can't edit SVG images. Seleucus (talk) 03:21, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Would be nice to have the Rixos Hotel on the map where the international journalists are. --Chech Explorer (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
I agree, that way we know where the journalists are when they hear fighting, so we get an idea of how far away then rebels are. Oh, and can someone fix the thumbnail problem going on with the map? Here's an AJE Live Blog stating where the front lines are: [1] 70.187.185.194 15:06, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
You'll need to look around Commons for a tech help page. In order to help debugging, precise information is needed. i suggest that you click on http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/Tripoli_uprising.svg/300px-Tripoli_uprising.svg.png , find out which version is the one you see, and then comment that here with your standard signature (that will approximately timestamp your access). Boud (talk) 15:19, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Can someone else do it, I would do it myself, I'm not a technology guy at all, I just know the basics. the problem is that the map continues to revert to the one where the rebels control nothing in Tripoli area. Does anyone else have this problem? 70.187.185.194 16:52, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
It's difficult for any "technology guys" to help you if you cannot give more specific details:
  • What do you mean specifically by "the map"? Which URL (http:...something) did you click on? When exactly did you click?
  • Exactly which map do you mean by "the one where the rebels control nothing in Tripoli area"? There are many where they control very little.
I may not be able to solve your problem, but the more details you give, the easier it will be for someone to solve your problem. Boud (talk) 19:35, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

I would have done it but the file seems to have some error related to Ubuntu and some fonts not supported or missing in Windows/Illustrator so when I try to save the file I get an error. --Chech Explorer (talk) 16:55, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

It's unlikely to be related to Ubuntu font specification, IMHO: font-family:Ubuntu is present 12 times in each of the seven versions of the svg file; -inkscape-font-specification:Ubuntu Bold is present once in each of the two oldest versions. Any reasonable svg editor should be able to substitute alternative fonts for viewing purposes if it doesn't have the specific fonts listed, it seems to me. Boud (talk) 19:35, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
i've added a fallback font of sans-serif to all the font-family attributes in the .svg file, as per recommendations by the tool linked from Commons:SVG Check. Boud (talk) 20:42, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Janzur

I'm starting to get reports that Janzur is under rebel control http://twitter.com/#!/IbnOmar2005/status/105294658023858176 http://twitter.com/#!/Inphinite_/status/105294572229373952 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richhaddon (talk • contribs) 15:10, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

I heard that there was only heavy fighting in Janzur, and that rebels controlled only a small portion of it. 70.187.185.194 15:12, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
AP confirms the western rebels have reached Janzour. Someone needs to update the map Smurfy (talk) 18:14, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Fighting occurring in Green Square, needs red: [2]. Also a lot of fighting in Janzur, red area needs to be expanded. 70.187.185.194 20:49, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

AJE crosscheck: al-Sabaa?

http://blogs.aljazeera.net/liveblog/libya-aug-21-2011-1838

Quoting from "The anti-Gaddafi fighters have fully taken control of ...", which of these are on the 11:56 GMT 21 Aug map?

  • Tajoraa, yes
  • Suq al-Jumaa, yes
  • Arada ??? yes
  • al-Sabaa ???

"Al Jazeera correspondent said , adding that clashes were still underway in ..."

  • Ben Ashhour, no (but bordering Fashlum/Fashloum/Fashom)
  • Fashlom, yes
  • Zawiyat al-Dahmani yes (partially)

Does anyone know where the Arada and Sabaa areas are? Should we stretch out the Fashlom red fuzzy area to Ben Ashhour? (talk) 15:31, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

i'm guessing the arada area is around arrada street on the map? or i am being a bit stupid--Richhaddon (talk) 15:56, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
It sounds like a reasonable guess to me, though someone else might know better - i didn't download the svg source earlier on, so i missed that on the map. Boud (talk) 16:19, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
'Arrada and al-asab'a (الأصابعة) are two small residential areas that are actually part of Suq al-Jum'a, but since al-Jazeera have mentioned them then I shall add them to the map.--Rafy (talk) 18:28, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Should we try to distinguish areas "under control" vs "clashes underway"? If yes, how? By e.g. several arrows pointing outwards? Boud (talk) 15:31, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
I think that the map should have red and green arrows to represent offensives, like the tripolitanian front map. 70.187.185.194 19:44, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
I added red dots to areas where fighting has been reported. The situation is fluid and I expect them to appear and disappear often.--Rafy (talk) 18:28, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Can someone please fix the map issue, where it continues to revert to the one where rebels control nothing in Tripoli? I don't know where the front line is. The error is occurring only on apple computers. PLEASE!!!! 70.187.185.194 19:05, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

I have added a thumbnail to make updates visible when the main image fails to refresh.--Rafy (talk) 19:51, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
70.187.185.194: Nobody can solve your issue if you do not give details. The thumbnail issue i raised earlier is no longer an issue for me. Now you seem to say you just want to see the .svg file itself. Please try downloading the file: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Tripoli_uprising.svg - if this file shows no anti-Gaddafi control, then maybe Commons:Graphics_village_pump would be a good place to start asking for help. In a GNU/Linux (or similar, e.g. Mac OS, Unix, ...) system, you should be able to download the file from the command line with wget http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Tripoli_uprising.svg. Boud (talk) 19:57, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Solution. You must click on the 'refresh' button (or, alternatively, clear the cache.) Essentially, the computer thinks it already knows what the picture looks like since it's loaded it before, and hence saves time by not reloading it. 68.42.243.198 20:08, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
I can't believe that worked! Thank you so much! 70.187.185.194 20:17, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Additional regions under rebel control

- Mitiga airport is besieged, so I would extend the red to surround it. - Al Jazeera reported that rebels also control *Mansoura*, in western Tripoli (next to the city center) [3] 68.42.243.198 17:31, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

The Mitiga Airport is under opposition control. 70.187.185.194 20:16, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Rebel territory in the west

As rebels from Zawiya have entered western Tripoli, I would make the red in Janzur deeper and more than just a dot (something like that in Tajura.)

Also, they should control a bit more territory than that. Per sky news, they are now 8 km away from the city center [4]. With the aid of Google Maps [5], the red should go up until just before the People's Hall, basically. 68.42.243.198 20:49, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

✓ Done.--Rafy (talk) 20:59, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Also add the Green Square, Mitiga Airport, and I think I heard that the rebels had shut down all the roads leading to/from Tripoli (to prevent Gaddafi from escaping), so a red dot needs to be added at the tip of all the roads leaving Tripoli. 70.187.185.194 21:04, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Gaddafi's personal security forces... not Gaddafi forces in general. There is still fighting going on, which is clear from the BBC reporter in the Rixos hotel (you can hear the fighting, and it doesn't sound like the celebratory gunfire you hear in other places, its accompanied by explosions lol) — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 99.236.222.99 (talk) 23:39, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Green Square

My guess regarding these apparent contradictions: a failure to distinguish between the bulk of the armed anti-G forces and small groups that have advanced further - all the way to Green Square. In any case, something more solid is probably needed before putting red shading on Green Square... Boud (talk) 21:16, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

The ABC(US) News report refers to "multiple reports" of rebel forces being in Green Square. Western journalists are probably not yet going to take the risk of going that deep into the heart of Tripoli, i guess, but they're not the only source of info. Probably time for some red dots there? Update

OK this map is 6 hours out of date it needs to be updated, it would not be jumping the gun at this point,--J intela (talk) 00:28, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

The rebels control WAY more neighborhoods in Tripoli than the map says they do. They control the majority of the city, including the Green Square (now renamed Martyr's Square by the rebels). 70.187.185.194 01:16, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Here's a link that says how much of Tripoli rebels control: [7] 70.187.185.194 01:40, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
True as it may be, these maps can only be updated as specific information come in -- Tarjura is reported to be under rebel control, and so a red swathe is added specifically to that area. 90% as claimed in Zeina Khodr's coverage is, again, even if it's true, too vague to update these maps. Nemesis6 (talk) 03:24, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
The main impediment to updating the map is the lack of exact information. 90% of the city is under rebel control - so what 10% of the city isn't? The only thing we know for semi-sure is Bab al-Aziziya. 68.42.243.198 05:35, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
And the Rixos Hotel. But the Green (Martyr's) Square can at least be updated. And the red areas in the neighborhoods can be expanded. 70.187.185.194 07:03, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
I've tried using w:inkscape to add w:Martyrs' Square as "Martyrs' Square (formerly Green Square)" to anti-G control and have uploaded. There was an ambiguity problem in that the map had what seems to be Green-Sq-formerly-M-Square labelled as "Martyrs' Square" and coloured in red, and a green area to the east and right next to the sea as "Green Square" and coloured in green. I've left this as a single label pointing to the western of the previous two areas. As an inkscape novice, i couldn't find out how to select and remove the extra stroke (short line) that is still there. Boud (talk) 08:25, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
I don't see any change.
The rebels went from Janzur to Martyr Square, with no resistance between. The red could be extended through that part of the city.
I'd do it, but I have no idea what to use for a spray can, since the tool with the spray-can icon in Inkscape is a clone tool. Kwamikagami (talk) 08:27, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Just reverted Martyr's Square. It wasn't a separate operation, but taken in the drive from the west. To shade the square for the rebels, we need to shade in everything between it and Janzur.

Kwamikagami (talk) 08:47, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Done. Though someone else can probably do better. Wiki, wiki, wiki. Boud (talk) 10:09, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Maybe we could shade the areas known to be under Gaddafi's control green, and leave the rest blank? Kwamikagami (talk) 08:47, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
IMHO there's no harm in adding green shading for the "four or so" G-controlled regions, and leaving some areas with the background beige - provided we have sources. After all, that's what we have for several of the 2011 Libya uprising related maps. Around Rixos hotel and around Bab al-Aziziya seem to be generally sourced as being under G control. Boud (talk) 10:09, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
What i meant to say is that what seems most reasonable to me is to continue with red fuzzy regions where the sources generally indicate anti-G control and to start green fuzzy regions where the sources generally indicate G control. Unknown regions will show up as the background sort-of-beige colour. Rixos hotel and Bab al-Aziziya seem to be sourced G controlled regions IMHO. Boud (talk) 10:24, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, good. The rebels say the port is still under G's control. And they were in control of the hospital in Tajura, but were supposedly negotiating surrender several hours ago. Reports of "a military base" until govt control as well.
Also, I doubt it's the Rixos hotel itself. Probly the area around the hotel, but the hotel is where the reporters are, so that's what we hear about. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:38, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Sadly I can't find the source but several live ticker on German sites report the Rebels have gotten the State TV building and surroundings under control. Can anyone find English sources? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 31.17.180.45 (talk) 13:52, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Mitiga?

i thought i saw sources saying that Mitiga Airport is now fully under anti-G control. Is that right? That could be uncontroversially updated on the map. Boud (talk) 10:26, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

But according to Al Jazeera, tanks at the port.[8] Kwamikagami (talk) 11:01, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Al Mansoura still under govt.
Al Jazeera still showing Mitiga as G, but may just not be updated. Kwamikagami (talk) 11:06, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Where? I'm struggling to look for sources with Mitiga still under loyalist control, so I would suggest updating it. 68.42.243.198 12:14, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
I also don't see what justifies the green colour for Mitiga airport. If anyone has any sources indicating that Mitiga airport is under Gaddhafi control, please provide them. Otherwise, the colour should be changed. Alfons Åberg (talk) 13:01, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Fixes to map

The Guardian has a decent picture showing the extent (the sizes of the circles) and control of loyalist presence in the city. [9] (Click 'zoom in on Tripoli')

Basic takeaways are: The port is in the wrong place The major loyalist strength left is apparently in Fashloum So too much green is shaded around Bab al Aziziya.

In addition, if the situation in Mitiga is unclear, does so much of it have to be shaded green, to the point where it spills over in the east into Tajura? Seleucus (talk) 12:20, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Well I have lived in Tripoli for some time and I can assure you that the main port lies close to the old city (east of the green square). The other area where loyalists are concentrating is more shallow and usually occupied by smaller boats.
The green area stretches from Mansoura (where the TV building is located) to the hotel where journalists are staying.
The green in Mitiga covers an area where a hospital controlled by loyalists.--Rafy (talk) 12:42, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
The port looks like in the right place now (when I typed that, it was the region north of the old green square that was shaded.)
I haven't heard anything about that hospital - could you give a link, or add it to the article page? Seleucus (talk) 14:29, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Ok never mind that. This one confirms that it have been taken. The source also mentions that they came under attack in "al-Haniya" (should be al-Hani) which lies between Znata and Ben 'Ashur, so I extended the loyalists range around the port.--Rafy (talk) 15:25, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I would wait a bit on that; unclear of how much of the area the rebels control surrounding it right now Seleucus (talk) 15:57, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Though Bab al Aziziya was attacked from the north, so should at least give rebels territory north of it... and it does look now like it's been taken. Seleucus (talk) 16:17, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Port

There hasn't been any news from the port lately, and this BBC map [11] reports that rebels are now in control of it (and the surrounding area, like Fashloum.) Perhaps time to color it red? Seleucus (talk) 15:57, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

This Guardian map (click on zoom in on tripoli [12]) also shows the port 'now under rebel control.' Seleucus (talk) 15:58, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Hotel and Port

I believe that the map is currently inaccurate for two reasons. One being, that the Gaddafi loyalists still control the hotel. Also, per the recourse provided in a previous comment, the rebels control the port. Also, does anybody know the status of the university? 71.192.193.182

Yes, Smurfy's edit prematurely gave Rixos to the rebels. --NetRolller 3D (talk) 16:53, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Corinthia Hotel?

According to France24.com, the Corinthia Hotel (high-rise hotel de luxe west of the harbour area) were _not_ under NTC/NLA control some nine hours ago [13] (in French). It had, according to source, been overlooked by the NLA/rebels and housed wealthy friends of Gaddafi, amongst others. Possibly the area around the hotel (which lies in a high-rise district) could be changed to yellow, awaiting total clearance of the area. No fight or Gaddafi forces were mentioned at France24.com.--Paracel63 (talk) 21:49, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

A little caution with that map. They don't even know where the airport is, and got Mansura wrong too. Kwamikagami (talk) 08:15, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

title

Why? It is quite clear on the Wikipedia page that uses it, and readers still need a legend to the map to interpret the colours. If such a legend was included into the image, that text would be impossible to read when thumbnailed, so including text doesn't really fix anything. It just clutters up space. 89.150.160.26 17:05, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Rixos Hotel Control

Does anyone have any idea who now controls the Rixos? For the longest time, it was said to be controlled by Gaddafi loyalists, but then there are reports of the gunmen who were holding the journalists there capitulating and letting them go. And I also found these photos, which Reuters say are outside and inside the Rixos respectively [16][17]. At the same time, I see no reports from any news agencies that the rebels have taken control of it, and I think it would have been pretty big news. Any leads on this? 173.70.83.241 00:10, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Last I head it was the front line. The urban side was rebel, the woods side loyalist. Kwamikagami (talk) 17:37, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
So you mean that the hotel itself is supposedly under rebel control, but the park and woods behind it is still in Gaddafi control? 173.70.83.241 17:57, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

No, because when the rebels took Bab Al-Aziziya, they took the woods too, and the front line was right in front of the Rixos Hotel. At least that's what I thought. 70.187.185.194 18:04, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Last I head the woods were still full of snipers. Of course, that's 2nd or 3rd hand, so who knows. Kwamikagami (talk) 18:28, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
The woods are crawling with loyalist snipers: AJE video. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 19:05, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
That's all fine and dandy, but in any case, there still seems to be a lot of haze on who controls the hotel. 173.70.83.241 19:32, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

[18] Journalist went back to the hotel to pick up her stuff: "the first thing I saw was a rebel flag hanging on the Rixos." Kwamikagami (talk) 21:10, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Well in that case, maybe the map should be changed to accommodate that. As well as the recent developments in the Abu Salim District. 173.70.83.241 21:24, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
All the gunmen had left except one, and then he let them go and presumably went back to his family. But how far rebel control extends is anyone's guess. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:29, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Such is the reality of the fog of war I suppose. We should know soon enough, after it settles. 173.70.83.241 21:33, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

I really think the map needs an update, since rebels are now fighting (and obviously advancing) in Abu Salim and in Rixos area ~ Vectrex 18:00, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

The rebels are fighting for control of Abu Salim, but it's still loyalist controlled. When the rebels take it, then we'll update the map. 70.187.185.194 18:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

And confirmation from today that loyalists still control the Ras Jdir border crossing.[19] Kwamikagami (talk) 21:33, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

KK, I think you are looking for File talk:Tripolitanian Front.svg. This map deals only with Tripoli. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 21:35, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
I've posted there and updated the map. But since I was here, I thought I'd mention it, since we've shown rebel control for quite a while now, without any confirmation. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:03, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Per Al Jazeera, loyalists fled Gharghur when G's compound fell. I think our map's compatible with that. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:59, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Al Jazeera, 25 min ago: "In Tripoli opposition fighters are still battling to take control of Ghargour and Bab-Al Aziziya, which was Gaddafi's compound. One of the areas that the rebels now control after fighting for hours is Abu Salim." Kwamikagami (talk) 09:24, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Extended arias

It would really be better if the map could show the arias around tripoli--J intela (talk) 04:27, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

There is Tripolitanian Front map for displaying regional developments. This map is intended to show happenings in the city only. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 04:41, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Cosmetic things...

There looks to be some fade-out of rebel control on both edges of the town, which I think we all can agree is not the case. Also, on the right side there seems to be a thin bar of beige and red colouration running down the edge of the map. Any chance someone with more technological competence than myself could correct these? ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 20:40, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Why the expanded green area?

Has there been a counteroffensive by Ghaddafi loyalists since yesterday? I thought Garghur area got green(er) because loyalists moved there after Abu Salim area was invaded/taken over by the NLA? Now (late Friday, Libyan time) I see much of Abu Salim area is back to green, together with Ben Gashir area and part of the university campus. Have new things happened on the ground? As there are reports of "sightseeing" visits to the Bab Al-Aziziyah compound, I find it hard to believe the green area still reaches to the southern end of Bab-al-Aziziah. And according to the map the Rixos hotel area is still disputed? Considering all these areas of preliminary control by either side, I think more yellow is needed on the map. What do you think?--Paracel63 (talk) 20:55, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I was wondering the same. I think Abu Salim should definitely be yellow; rebels stormed the area yesterday, which means that green (loyalist controlled) is an inappropriate colour for the neighbourhood. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 21:13, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
A recent report at Al-Jazeera English suggests it should all be red - that the rebels have pushed south of the area shown on the map. If so, then the map has outlived its usefulness. Agricolae (talk) 02:27, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Agreed, someone PLEASE fix.96.33.168.113 02:29, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
[20] Acc to this Qasr bin Ghashir, settlement north of Tripoli INT airport, is under rebel control however I cannot get any solid info about which districts are under G control (although I suspect Sidi Salim and Hadba to be the case) so until I can get that Im waiting to confirm rebel claims about the loyalist forces beeing pushed out completely from the city. --EllsworthSK (talk) 10:14, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
Scratch that, Im reading reports that G forces are stationed only in Greater Tripoli, therefore not in Tripoli city itself but in its vicinity. As map does not have those areas Im editing it and maybe we should start thinking about closing the article. --EllsworthSK (talk) 10:57, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
