Although pretty there is a fundamental topological flaw with this animation. A plane can map to a torus and vice versa but the torus is of a different topological genus than the sphere and one cannot be transformed into the other without resorting to actions that violate principles of mathematics (but 3D modelling programs have no such limitations).

The animation presented here is nevertheless artistic - even if it is not rigorously possible mathematically.
