Nederlands: Een eeuw geleden vond de Eerste Wereldoorlog plaats. Met name in het noorden van Frankrijk en België werd zwaar gevochten en vielen in vier jaar tijd miljoenen slachtoffers. Nederland keek weliswaar vanaf de zijlijn toe, maar de gevolgen voor Zeeland, op zo'n 50 kilometer afstand van de frontlinie, waren groot.
De Nederlandse regering besloot in 1913 Fort de Ruyter aan de Westerschelde bij Vlissingen te bouwen. Daarmee kon de toegang tot de haven van Antwerpen worden afgesloten, als dat nodig zou zijn. Duitsland viel op 4 augustus 1914 België binnen, maar liet Nederland links liggen. Fort De Ruyter, waarvan slechts pas de fundamenten waren geplaatst, werd niet meer afgebouwd. |
