English: Yiddish: A tale of survival, a documentary created by first time Montreal filmmaker, Abigail Hirsch, will have its world premiere at the New York City International Film Festival Gala on June 18th, 2013.
Inspired by the Montreal International Yiddish Theatre Festival, the filmmaker explores via intimate interviews and theatre clips how theatre has been used to keep the rich vernacular of Yiddish alive in Montreal, Israel, and Europe. The intimate stories of three individuals of three generations, illuminates how art can be both political and revolutionary. Bryna Wasserman, legendary Honorary Artistic Director of the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre is one of the three principal characters in this narrative feature. The other two characters are Shmuelik Atzmon, an Israeli actor who, at the age of fifty, created the first Yiddish Theatre in Israel, and Milena Kartowsky, a twenty-three year old Yiddish singer and activist from Paris.
