Wykeham Terrace in central Brighton, UK

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wykeham Terrace. Head south through the graveyard until you reach a wall. Cut into the hill is one of the best examples of Regency Gothic in the city built between 1822-30 by either Amon Henry Wilds or Henry Mew. The terrace has a colourful history between 1855-1912 numbers 1-5 and 8-11 was the St Marys Home for Female Penitents, a home for reformed female prostitutes run by nuns. For a while a cavalry officers mess was also based in the northern part of the terrace. Post Second World War the houses were used as billets for the Territorial Army who moved out in the late 1960s to be replaced by squatters who themselves were evicted in 1969. The terrace was restored in 1970 and refurbished into single homes again. Famous residents include Dame Flora Robson, Sir Roy Strong, Adam Faith and Leo Sayer. The building is painted grey every 5 years as part of the original covenent. Click on the link to take you to the next page. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/212520
