Summary
[edit]DescriptionWoodland and moorland on the Otterburn Ranges - geograph.org.uk - 1484313.jpg |
English: Woodland & moorland on the Otterburn Ranges Heather moorland and birch woodland dominate the scenery of the Otterburn Ranges near Yardhope, part of the extensive military training area. The woodland in the stream valleys is considered to be ancient and semi-natural dating back to before 1600 and some of the oldest in Northumberland. Logs, poles and firewood have been commonly used from here and in the 13th and 14th centuries wood was harvested by a charcoal industry providing fuel for local iron smelting. |
