Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wilsthorpe Beach, Wilsthorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Anti-tank blocks on the beach near the medieval village of Wilsthorpe, south of Bridlington. There is very little cliff here and much of the farmland is only a couple of metres above sea level. The area which is now constantly threatened by the North Sea was thought extremely vulnerable to enemy attack during the Second World War and was heavily fortified. Many major defensive installations have been destroyed by erosion and some of the pillboxes now close to the beach would once have been in supporting positions further inland. Some of the concrete structures south of here around Barmston were removed in the 1970s and local farmers complained that this increased the rate at which farmland was washed away by the sea.
