Description

San Luis National Wildlife Refuge, Merced County, California

Explored 3/22/19, Positions 159 - 207

I only noticed this Wilson's Snipe because a Black-necked Stilt was chasing it. It escaped the BNST and hunkered down in the grass with just a bit of its head showing. I shot a bunch of photos and finally gave up on it moving. We returned in 1 1/2 hours after a drive on the Tule Elk Auto Tour and wondered if it might still be there. It hadn't move at all. It was still hunkered down in the grass with just a bit of its head showing. However, this time it raised its body up a bit, and I was able to get this shot. When we checked the next morning, we half expected it to still be there, but it was finally gone.
