Abstract: Find out how your GLAM can use the workflow developed at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, for making cohesive topic-based contributions to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Used so far for natural history collections but easily adapted, Te Papa’s process combines collection images and metadata, research outputs, and curatorial knowledge in a manageable project that encourages collaboration.

This talk will present the workflow we developed at the national museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, for making cohesive topic-based contributions to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.

We know it’s hard to get going on making contributions as a GLAM, so our workflow can help show you how to create and run a project that’s nicely scoped while being worth the effort! We’ve used this structure to successfully release GLAM collection objects into the Wikimedia ecosystem, together with the rich metadata, research outputs, and curatorial knowledge our museum creates.

Our highlighted projects focus on biodiversity collections in natural history institutions, which are underrepresented in the wiki space, but the workflow will suit any GLAM collection that has collection images and associated data and knowledge.

In this practical talk, we’ll share some of the highlights and challenges of our experiences developing this GLAM workflow, and you’ll gain step-by-step tips on how to do the same at your institution. We’ll show how a core team of enthusiastic GLAM staff can combine their individual areas of expertise into a productive and fun collaboration.
