Description |
English: Whitby harbour, Yorkshire. Perched high above the town, the ruins of Whitby Abbey can be seen in the background of this photograph. The abbey was an important early Christian site and has always been a landmark for sailors and visitors to the town. Irish author Bram Stoker stayed in Whitby’s Royal Hotel while writing his famous horror story Dracula, much of which is set in the town. In 1746, James Cook (later Captain Cook) was apprenticed to a local ship owner in the town. The ships used on his expeditions were also built in Whitby’s shipyard. |
