Summary
[edit]DescriptionWhere The Commendator Was Roasted - geograph.org.uk - 1306407.jpg |
English: Where The Commendator Was Roasted Dunure was the first castle built by the local ruling family, the Kennedys. From a 13th century court, the castle was extended and upgraded over the next 200 years. The most famous event was the torture of the Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey by Gilbert Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis, in 1565. According to the story, the Commendator was roasted alive on an open fire in the vault of Dunure Castle. This was an attempt to secure rich lands belonging to the church. The Commendator was rescued by the rival Kennedy laird from Bargany, and the lands were redistributed. (Source: "The Castles Of South-West Scotland", by Mike Salter) |
