Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Welsh Blacks at Parc Faenol. Welsh Blacks are a traditional native breed of hardy cows. At one time these parklands were the home of the rare Vaynol breed of cows, unique to the estate. These were mainly white cattle. The Assheton-Smiths insisted that any black calf born to the herd had to be destroyed at birth for fear of an ensuing death in the family. These genteel sophisticates were often more supersitious than the most rustic of their tenants.
With the sale of the estate, the herd was bought by Leeds City Council. The Vaynol cows now survive only at Templenewsam Farm, Leeds.
