PASSING OF FRANK BIVINS, CDR, DC, USN

CDR Frank Bivins, DC, USN passed away August 17, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Alabama as the first son of an Air Force Family. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in World History and earned his DDS from Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1988.

Upon joining the Navy, CDR Bivins was assigned to DET 23rd Dental Company at 29 Palms. Additional active duty tours included: Naval Dental Center San Francisco, 1st Dental Company, SDO of USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC19) and SDO for USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and multiple tours at NAF Atsugi as a Dental Officer with Naval Dental Center Far East and as the Department Head for BHC Atsugi. CDR Bivins completed his Advanced Clinical Practice in General Dentistry in June of 2002 at Camp Pendleton. He continued to treat patients at USNH Yokosuka’s Fleet Dental Clinic while battling cancer his final year. CDR Bivins loved the challenges of the Navy spending the majority of his career overseas or in operational platforms. He stated that the operational environment was the most rewarding experience he had serving in the Navy.

CDR Bivins embraced his overseas experience with his wife Yuko. Together they spent many years stationed in and around the Kanto Plain of Japan as they raised their two boys between two cultures in two countries.

CDR Bivins enjoyed reading, watching movies, listening to music, and travelling. His knowledge of histories from all over the world allowed him to share insight and historical background while watching movies/TV and on travel with his family. He also enjoyed cooking and was always preparing “oishi” meals for family.

He is survived by his wife, Yuko; daughter, Amber a student at Duke University; and two sons, Aoi and Amon; his brothers Michael and Anthony; his sister Sharon; and his mother Martha.
