Description

"New Orleans sandwich shop, Louisiana." Mid 1930s
"N.E.Sauls Grocery & Sandwich Shop"

Note: This is one of two known Walker Evans photos of this building, the other seen at Image:Walker Evans New Orleans street corner.jpg. The Library of Congress site dates that image to August 1936 and this image to January, 1936. However it looks more likely that both photos were taken within minutes of each other, one either side of the arrival or departure of the delivery truck. Note the ladder in the same space and same writing on the chalk board.

Per Soards City Directory 1935 and R.L. Polk Guide 1938 (confirming same information), Norman E. Sauls, grocery, 1101 Prytania Street. This was the uptown lake corner of Prytania and Caliope Street. Building no longer exists; location is as of 2007 under the elevated highway of the Pontchartrain Expressway ramp to the Crescent City Connection Bridge. I think the high-rise building visible at the top right is the Bienville Hotel. -- Infrogmation
