PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD- WILMINGTON BRICK-ARCH VIADUCT WILMINGTON, NEWCASTLE CO., DE. Sec. 1201, MP 27.73. (See HAER NO. Description |
English: The elevated viaduct of Interstate 95 passes from center foreground towards the right rear of the picture. Behind it, crossing from left front to right rear of the picture, is the brick arch portion of the Wilmington Rail Viaduct, over which a Metroliner is running. Behind the Metroliner, in the center of the picture, are the Wilmington and Northern Railroad shops. Large, multistory industrial buildings behind the shops include a National Vulcanized Fibre mill and the DuPont shops. In the distance behind the NVF mill can be seen the twin spires of St. Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church. At left front, a complex network of railroad track exists. Running parallel to and at the base of the viaduct is a single track formerly owned by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (Pennsylvania Railroad), a remnant of the old main line left behind after construction of the viaduct. Two tracks emerge from beneath the viaduct at the left front corner and cross this track at grade. The rear track is the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's South Market Street Branch. After crossing the PB&W track, it reaches a switch; the South Market Street Branch runs parallel to the viaduct and enters a freight interchange yard with the PB&W, while the South Side Extension extends to the right under the highway viaduct. The track immediately in front of the B&O is the W&N's main line. It also crosses the PB&W track and reaches a switch. The main line crosses the South Side Extension and disappears between the interchange yard and the highway viaduct; the other leg of the switch is the W&N Wharf Branch, which runs to the right, paralleling the South Side Extension. On the right side of the picture, the two last-named lines emerge from beneath the highway viaduct and cross the W&N Mill Creek Cutoff at grade. |
